FDA warning on Haldol

http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/InfoShe...aloperidol.htm

I still get so shook up at the very word Haldol, and the vision of those ER physicians holding my son down and pumping him full of it while I stood by in shock at what was happening......well, it surprises me as to just how it still impacts me after almost 7 years:(

Haldol MADE my son psychotic, of that I have no doubt, and their increased administration of it did things to his health that he has never fully recovered from.

ugh

bad memories:o but at least we found a better way to help him and for that I am soooo thankful

hoping this new alert will maybe bring a halt to this dangerous drug being so quickly prescribed for TS, especially in kids

Very important...

Boy, Chemar I get the goose bumps reading this post and what you and your
son went through .... That had to be truly awful!

I have a QT post on Useful Websites at Chronic pain...
even though Haldol is on list #1... there, it would expand that thread,
post #4 if you could add this FDA link there, just at the bottom?

QT is a serious thing, and more and more sudden deaths are being reported now tracing back to drugs and their interactions with dehydration or other drugs.
I have been posting it for several years now so people understand the risks.

Just as an aside... in long term care, we use alot of this drug in injectable form..it is quite scary, since nurses are given orders to increase doses prn.:(

thanks mrsD yes, it was one of the scariest times of my life...but thank God it opened my eyes so wide to the dangers of so many of the "brain" drugs young kids and adolescents are given without sufficient warnings to parents on their potentially dangerous side effects.

It also started me on the path to search for alternatives and now, I can look at the brilliant and talented young man he is at 17, one who hasnt let TS "have" him, and just be thankful. :)

ps added the link for you on CP forum

Haldol IS scary! It was the first med my kids' father was prescribed for his TS, and he soon refused all meds because of it! He also did not want to get a dx for our daughter (who is OCD, ADHD, and tics) at the time because he worried that she would be placed on Haldol. Only after we separated did she get diagnosed, and recently our son was diagnosed with TS as well. So far, no meds for my son and only clonidine for my daughter. The scary thought is that the one experience with Haldol was so bad as to cause him to fear even diagnosis!

I was injected with Haldol for several months, but spent two years in a virtual comatose state. With two small children I couldn't cope and asked the local authrity to accomadate them. It was the hardest thing i have ever done and for every second away from them there wrer a million tears. I implore anyone to think long and hard before taking this drug!!!!!
