My 2 year old son's shunt revision

My son had a shunt revision two days ago. He does not talk yet so he can not tell me how he feels. How should he be feeling now and what should I expect of his recovery? Many of you may have had a revision at one time so I thought you could let me know how it feels. He slept a lot today and was a little irritable. He may even have a head ache because he is covering his eyes from time to time. I just get nervous that the shunt is not working again. Appreciate your input. Thanks, Suzanne:confused:

It is common for a while after shunt surgery (or any surgery, really) to feel tired and nauseated. General anaesthetics are quite harsh, and take time to get out of your system. He will also be extremely sensitive around the incision site, so try not to touch his head unless you absolutely have to (for example, to change the dressing). He WILL have a headache for a while - after all, he has just had his head opened up - and should have pain relief for this. I was given a box of strong painkillers (codeine) as I left the hospital after my last surgery. It's quite alright to take these medications as prescribed by the doctor.

Hope that helps you a bit!

I haven't had surgery in a LONG time, but I remember not really being tired but slow for about a week or so after getting home. (I was in the hosp for 5 days.) I had bouts of pain here and there as I healed...and then I itched like mad for about another month. Whatever you do, get something for itching and do not let him scratch! He can infect his incisions.
