Can I assume that......
 

......some of you on this forum developed neuropathy first and THEN were diagnosed with prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes.

If there is anyone here who fits that bill, how did it eventually get diagnosed? Did a perceptive neurologist order an OGTT or some other test, hence the diagnosis?

Briefly my story: GP diagnoses PN end of July 2007 - he did B12 and random glucose test (both 'normal'). As I felt very unwell he sent me ASAP to a neurologist who did lots of tests - all of which were within normal limits. She also did a random blood glucose - normal. When I discussed the possibility of eliminating pre/diabetes by way of an OGTT my GP said "no need" your random levels were completely normal.

A few weeks later I went to visit my Endocrinologist (who I see for adrenal insufficiency) and asked whether there could be any connection with my adrenal gland condition (taking long term steroids) and the development of PN. He became very irritable and touchy. He verbally shot me down in flames when I asked whether it could be worthwhile having an OGTT to eliminate any possibility of fluctuating glucose levels being the cause of my PN. He said absolutely "NO he would NOT order an OGTT". I thought I had some rapport with this man who I have been seeing for six years....but obviously not. He basically denied I even had PN and said "whatever" I have would go away.

I have read quite a lot of research papers which show a large number or prediabetic cases are revealed through the OGTT. Is there something fundamentally wrong with these research findings?

Any advice/suggestions would be most appreciated. :)

PS. I will be looking for another Endocrinologist after my upcoming visit. I'll give him one more chance and see if he has 'thought' about anything I said. He does that sometimes!

Hi, I got PN first. I went through three doctors before getting help.

I had trouble convincing the third doctor to give me a GTT because my fasting glucose was normal. The GTT was positive. The neurologist I went to then blew me off.

I also went to a nephrologist because the protein in my urine was high. The nephrologist is checking more blood tests for types of PN that increase protein in urine. He doesn't think I have nephropathy(of the kidneys), but ordered an ultrasound and more urine tests for damaged kidneys.

According to the tests so far the only thing my PN could be is diabetic related. I am already thin, so I have just been on a strict diet, and using the treadmill.

You should definitely get a GTT because my fasting glucose was normal like yours. However no one diagnosed me yet with diabetic neuropathy based on the GTT. Bring information to your doctor and get it.
