Found great book on food/supplements

I'll probably post this in the depression and weight loss forums too, but I read about this book in a weight loss thread on another website and it sounded it interesting and I went out and got it used from Amazon.

IT's called Food and Mood. The author, Nancy Snyderman, MA., R.D. talks about how certain chemicals in food can influence our brain chemistry. She also talks a lot about supplements. She is a big believer in the importance of the B Vitamins, especially B6, B12 and Folic Acid. I have been screaming from the rooftops about how I was considering going on an antidepressant, but taking B vitamins (thank you to my doctor, Mrs. D and Rose), exercise and proper eating (thank you to myself and weight watchers) has put all that to a halt. I am most grateful.

She discusses how food and/or supplements can help with the following:
Mood, Insomnia, Overweight, Fatigue, PMS, SAD, Depression, Srress, Intelligence and Nutrition.

My only complaint about the book is that when she talks about B12, she doesn't mention the Methyl. brand...other than that, it seems like good advice and is very interesting.

Oh, yes, I agree. I have this book. I mentioned it on Kimmydawn's thread.

I have the 2nd edition, and it is by Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D.

My cover says, foreward by Nancy Snyderman, M.D.

Yes, it is really interesting!

Does anyone have The Mood Cure by Julia Ross? I bought it for my daughter, but never read it myself. Just wondering how it measures up with other books of like topic.

I don't know, Cara...

I got my copy of the Food & Mood at a library book sale for 50 cents. It was brand new.

The first part (first 1/4 of the book) explains the neurotransmitters and
hormones really well. Easy to understand now. (this is a tough subject for anyone I think).

I'll look at the other, next time I am in a book store. Might be a while tho, since Ebay has me in its clutches! O.o LOL

Here's another one I picked up that looks good...
SuperFoods: Fourteen Foods That Will Chanfe Your Life
Steven G. Prat, M.D. and Kathy Mathews

Here are the foods and very generally what they are good for:
Beans (obesity)
(2) Blueberries and Wild Salmon ( prevents cardiovascular disease)
Broccoli (prevents cataracts and birth defects)
Oats (prevents type II diabetes)
Oranges (prevents strokes)
Pumpkin (prevents certain cancers)
Soy (lowers cholesterol)
Spinach (prevents heart disease and eye problems)
tea (prevents osteoporosis)
Tomatoes (skin protection)
Turkey (immune system protection)
Walnuts (coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer protection)
Yogurt (promotes strong bones and a healthy heart)

There is also a chapter called "super nutrients." According to the author, the top ones include:
Vitamin C
Folic Acid
Selenium
Vitamin E
Fiber
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
and others...

He mentions foods with Vitamin B throughout the book. He seems to really like Spinach!!!

Haven't finished the book yet...but it seems like a good one!

There is a good website and its called wholefoods but not the store. It talks about the nutrient density and what foods help with different issue. There is also a recipe and meal plan section. I also posted a book I read if I can recall the name was Nutrients for Neuropathy. This was good too and talked about supplements as well.
