Pampered for a week

People with Parkinson's Disease and their carers were treated to free relaxing treatments from kind-hearted students at Blackpool and the Fylde College this week.

Students from the School of Hair, Beauty and Related Therapies teamed up with the Parkinson's Disease Society to offer the treatments at the Annual Holiday Project, an event held every year at the Carousel Hotel in the resort, where sufferers and their carers are given a week away from their usual day-to-day routine.

Curriculum leader for higher education with the school, Tony Rinder, said: "There were around 60 of our students involved in the organisation and fulfilment of this event so as you can see it was a major undertaking.

"As well as beauty, holistic and sports treatment being provided at the hotel, delegates also attended our facilities at Ansdell for hairdressing appointments."

The Foundation Degree in Professional Practice's second year students were tasked with the organisation of the event, and they needed to ensure that it was run to commercial standards and they had first year students at their disposal as therapists.

Mr Rinder added: "This is the second time we have held this event.

"Last year it was a huge success due to the hard work of students and staff and I know that the Parkinson's Society directors were very impressed with our contribution.

"The students thoroughly enjoyed being able to help with such a worthy project and being able to spread a little cheer.

"Not one minded giving up their free time, in fact many even came in when they were off the rota."
