help
Hi:
I have some questions about diabetic peripheral neuropathy. I want to know more about vibration perception threshold as an instrument for assessing this problem (severity of neuropathy). could you pleaes help me?? |
do you mean the tuning fork? As far as i know that indicates the degree and spread of numbness and is used for all types of PN.

Vibration perception...
....at the great toe is used as an EARLY indicator of Distal Neuropathy. Vibration perception or the loss of same ,indicates some loss of nerve function in the Distal Periphery . Do you have diabetic neuropathy? I would be interested in knowing the particulars of your situation because we share the same diagnosis.

Hi,
Be aware too that there are other causes. Too many doctors automatically blame diabetes when there are other causes that should be addressed. Welcome. rose |
Hi and welcome narges,
As already mentioned, usually a neuro will test for vibration response from the large nerve endings with a tuning fork and a pin prick test for small fibre's for reaction as well, this can be followed by Quanitive Sensory testing, which test for small nerve damage but also measures vibration response as well. http://millercenter.uchicago.edu/lea...nt/index.shtml, More tests are usally done,, like a Nerve Conduction test http://www.medicinenet.com/nerve_con...st/article.htm and or a EMG... http://www.medicinenet.com/electromyogram/article.htm I was diagnosed as having prediabetes and i had low B12 as well. What has been done so far ? Brian :) |
