New here ....B12 questions help!
Hi, I'm new to this forum . I'm a 60 year old white male in the UK.
During the course of extensive testing in the last year for endocrine disorders I have been d/xed with V. low testosterone, vit D deficiency and a recent test showed B12 at 260 (scale 160 - 800). Six weeks ago the level was 490. My local labs are reporting the current level as OK / within scale/ no action required. Not knowing how B12 works, it seems that it is rapidly declining and is very near the bottom of the scale.......or does it fluctuate erratically perhaps? Any serious advice would be most welcome. Thanks in advance Brice |
update
Endo appointment today proved useful, agreed to run MMA test for B12 deficiency and should get that done about same time as results back from dexa scan for possible osteoporosis.
Still would appreciate some input if anybody out there has any advice about original question. Thanks |

Brice,
You are wise to take the B12 situation seriously. That MMA test should be done immediately, along with a homocysteine. And if I were you I would start taking at least 1000 mcg B12 orally per day right after the lab samples are drawn. I would not wait around. Damage can become serious and permanent while waiting. Even though those tests are much better than B12 alone, they also miss some cases, and with your level falling and especially suspicious the important thing is to get safe B12 into you. rose |
My B12 levels were higher...I believe around 500, and I was very tired and had other issues. I thought my Dr. was being overly cautious when he wanted me to take additional B12. He insisted, and I took it. I take a B50 tablet (has all the B's in it) and additional B12 on top of that in a separate tablet. I take the B12 that starts with the letters "methyl..." because this one is said to work the most efficiently. I agree, go to the vitamin board here at NeuroTalk to get additional and very good information. BTW, too much B12 will not hurt you. It can ONLY help and VERY likely this WILL be the case.

Good for that doc! Exceptionally well informed. Probably in the top 5% maximum.
