Something to remember

I lost my mom Sep 24, 2007 to breast cancer that had met to the liver.

She got a yearly mamogram faithfully. May 04 she had her annual mamogram. Nov 04 she found a lump. She went in and it was cancer.

When we met with the surgeon we took her mamogram films in (the report said she was clear). The surgeon pointed to the film and said there it is right there. They had misread her mamogram.

Here is what we have learned: Insist that your FILMS be sent to your doctor and ask the question "has this been compared to my last year's mamogram?". First, this gives a second pair of eyes to look at the film. Second, you have an estabilished relationship with your doctor because you chose him or her. Let's face it. People pay more attention to relationships over films. YOUR doctor is going to be more careful than someone who simply looks at film all day. Finally, think about our neuros. I know my neuro looks at every film I have done and compares it to the written report. Why would we expect any less from our ob/gyn?

Gigi, I appreciate your story and I really agree with you. Thank you so much. I am sorry about your mother.

Please keep getting the word out.

Peace.

:Good-Post:Thanks for the reminder. I did my self exam today and got my note in the mail that it was time for my mammogram. Although my mom didn't die from breast cancer,(I lost her to a stroke),I grieve her to this day. I'm so sorry for your loss. I most def will ask my doctor to look at my films and compare them to my previous.

I had my yearly mammogram this past month, and a nurse performed a breast exam afterward. During the exam she asked if I performed them monthly, which I don't, and she kindly handed me a brochure on the way out demonstrating the exam. I plan to have a complete physical, PAP, and mammogram evey year in my birthday month - July.

I had two paternal aunts who had breasts removed due to cancer, but no breast cancer history on my mother's side. One year my PCP also had me take a ultrasound along with a mammogram because she felt some small knots. Luckily the knots were only temporary, and were harmless.

Wow! I was wondering when I would stop doing that. I'm so sorry for your pain. There is something so intense about losing the one person who knew you before you were even you that cannot even be explained :grouphug:
