salivary gland stones
 

Anyone familiar with salivary gland stones? I had teeth pain on the bottom right side of my mouth and the dentist x-rayed the teeth and said they and the bone looked healthy. I took a trip and awakened with extreme jaw/ear pain. When I returned home 5 days later, my mouth under my tongue swelled and finally what appeared to be a stone came out with some pus and blood. The swelling went down. Back to the dentist and he put me on antibiotics again, but I have been sick for several weeks. How long does it take an infecton in the salivary gland to heal? I still have intermittent jaw pain and pain under the tongue. I brush, gently floss, and rinse with hydrogen peroxide. I suck on sour drops and drink extra water. My mouth is so sensitive I can hardly eat. Any suggestions? The swelling under my tongue is better today, but I am wondering whether or not this is the end of the nasty stones.

Who told you that you had stones?? Did the doctor do more than an xray?? According to what I read (above), they're hard to see on x-ray. I'm wondering if you still have more in there.

Are you taking Fosamax??

I am not taking Fosamax. I took the stone into the dentist's office with me. He thought it was a stone. A dill pickle is a good idea.

Go see a good ENT doctor, they should be able to help you. Good luck.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am doing much better now, as I think I am taking the correct antibiotic. Most of the infection has resolved. This ordeal was terribly painful and frustrating. I am happy that I am feeling better.

Glad to hear that you are feeling better!

Salivary stones or salivary duct irritation are not that uncommon. Either condition can be very painful and have a tendency to reoccur. Once a stone has come out, the duct can remain quite sore for several days. The antibiotic should help with the residual infection in the duct.

However, you may be prolonging the soreness by sucking on sour drops because the sourness causes irritation to the tissue which aggravates the already irritated duct. The best thing to do is drink at least 10 ounces of water a day to keep hydrated and for at least another week, rinse with warm salt water 3 times a day to heal and soothe the duct tissue. Any other rinse, even peroxide, will only irritate that area.

A homeopathic remedy that also helps with the healing of this condition is Arnica. You can place a few pellets under the tongue every 4-6 hours (for a week or so) and let them dissolve on their own. Arnica is great for reducing inflammation of the soft tissue.

Hope this is your one and only time with this painful condition!!
