Peripheral neuropathy
 

Hi,
My name is Carole. My husband has peripheral neuropathy. He has been
dealing with this for about the past 9 months. He is under dr. care and has also had a 2nd opinion (which both drs. agree on the neuropathy and its treatment. He is on SO MUCH MEDICATION it seems ridiculous to me.
Gabitril, gabapentin, mirtazapine, oxycodon, and the list goes on.
I know that all of this medication is screwing up not only his body, but also
his mind and his mood. He is still holding down his job, but of course he
struggle- because when he is in pain- he takes his pills and then he gets a
bit woozy- but then after 1/2 he seems better.
Can anyone out there give me any advise or tell me if another treatment is
possible. Im at the point where I just want to throw every pill he takes away.
I am trying to be as direct to the point as I can and I have been searching
and reading up on this and I would like to have some info from anyone who is
or has been dealing with this.
I would appreciate any info someone can give me.

I don't know if I can help you but I can relay my experiences with peripheral neuropathy and prescriptions. The first is gabapentin; I would throw this in the garbage. It really (as you know) leaves you in a fog and the next morning I'm left with a hangover. The second is the oxcontin; while this really seems to work for pain relief better than any other meds the doctor has tried on me it has side effects one of which is addiction the other is very noticeable reduced sex drive. I can't speak to the other meds but I find that exercise helps me the most. Don't get me wrong the pain is real but if you keep busy it is reduced. The only time that it’s really a problem is when you have to sit down for long periods or you lay down to sleep. If your husband can get himself tired enough from exercising maybe it will help him fall asleep; it helps me. As for sitting at home and watching TV, there is not much he can do except deal with the pain. There is no good answer to get rid of the pain but taking all those meds is most likely not the answer. Try having him read a book by Julian Whittaker (reversing diabetes). Your husband may not have diabetes but the book covers some remedies for neuropathy.

Please let me introduce myself:
My name is Alison, I am 12 years old and I suffer from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy in my left leg and right arm. I too am on a lot of medications including, Lyrica (similar to Gabapentin just a newer version), tramadol and Baclofen. I have also been on Morphine, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Amitriptyline and Gabapentin.

Hi Carole:
I don't know where to start or how to be brief. I am the victim of polyneuropathy. I'm now virtually disabled (feet and hands) because it took so long to get properly diagnosed...wasted to much time with GP's. I'm very familiar with the medication your husband is taking...all going nowhere. I'm not a doctor, but would suggest that he get a referral to a good hemotologist and get an electrofluorescence analyses done on his blood to check for protein-bearing antibodies released by his immune system or bone marrow. It's called anti-MAG (Myelin Associated Glycoprotein). It is progressive and usually irreversible. I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and have been taking chemotherapy for over 2 years. My only success was being able to halt it.....too late, but better than falling further down the sewer.
