Prenatal vitamins?
I had an appt today with a new pain specialist. His PA suggested pre-natal vitamins. He said that when someone has a compromised immune system, it might do them more good to take prenatal vitamins.
Any thoughts on this before I rush out to buy some? Billye |
Well, I am not the authority on this, but I take them.

Generally, most brands of prenatal vitamins--
--are notable for increased amounts of iron and folic acid, designed for the developing fetus' needs.
The dosages in these areas are not huge, though--typically, 400mcg of folic acid--twice the amount used in most standard multivitamins (and twice the USDA mimimum daily requirement), and up to 27mg of iron, which is one and a half times the listed USDA minimum requirement. Thre may also be increased amounts of other B-vitamins--but usually not in the range many of us are used to taking in our individual supplements. A prenatal vitamin probably wouldn't hurt you, but given the demands dysfunctional bodies make, it may not have enough of certain things to really help. In particular, there's usually not much more than the USDA daily minimum for D, calcium, magnesium, etc. So--depending on what else one is already taking, it may not be adding in that much more. |
no harm
Prenatal vitamins have more folic acid than OTC ones. 1mg
They typically have less Vit A, and sometimes a bit more B6 (10mg-25mg). They have Iron which post menopausal women do not need. (unless anemic). Typically they are low in Vit D, Vit A, and other bcomplex. Very low in Thiamine which helps PN alot. There are designed for PREGNANCY... Here is a common one... http://www.drugs.com/pdr/duet-tablet...uartnatal.html This one is even lower in nutrients: http://www.materna.ca/About/Default.asp |
Thanks all,
Looks like he needs to stay in school. I guess I'll stick with my daily's. I just worry about the pills passing thru and not being absorbed. My GI system is a mess. I've actually started back on my gluten free diet and it is so hard to find the hidden gluten and also not to have lapses in memory. We have a really busy doctor schedule right now and I thought we did a pantry cleaning a week ago. But my brain didn't register freezers. Yesterday I grabbed two tv dinners from the freezer because I had not planned any dinner.
You guessed it. Full of gluten which I thought about half way thru the meal. Billye |
Hi. I used to take the prenatal when I was super malnurished. The issue I had was I had to then work in the ones I was missing but not get too high on certain vitamins the prenatal had more of. If this makes sense. So I switched back to my womens multi and added the others in seperate. Random as for quick gluten free things like tv dinners and they have them cheaper at Walmart. Amy's and most are organic. Not all are gluten free but some are and that could help in a rush.
