we entertain angels unaware

The young man looked up with just the faintest smile as my husband walked towards him. His brilliant blue eyes caught Richards gaze, he was captivated by their depth and clarity, a rarity among the homeless population that are so often mentally ill and/or drug addicted. He sat on the sidewalk, backpack beside him as if waiting for something or someone …
Thin and dirty, the kind of dirty common among the poor in third world nations, but rarely seen here, his skin was literally crusted dark brown and black, evidence of many weeks if not months without a shower.
Sitting down beside him, Richard offered to share some of his food which he gladly accepted, and talked with him about Jesus, all the while taken by those beautiful blue eyes. An hour later they parted ways, RJ wondering if he would ever see him again, feeling strangely uplifted by the encounter as if he had been the benefactor of their exchange.
Last week he saw him and they visited again, this time the young man opening up about his life just a little more, still quietly ignoring personal questions like “what is your name” and “where are you from”, but sharing how he missed, and would really like to be reunited with his family.
Like quite a few homeless we have met, he knew the scriptures well, acknowledged and professed love for our Saviour Jesus Christ and had a gentle sweet spirit. He was clear headed and articulate, just lonely and poor with no where to go, and no one to care.
Richard shared this with me while I was cooking dinner and for some reason my heart was really touched, it always is to some degree, but there was something deeper here.
I wanted to find him, sit down and hug him, see if there is anything we could do help facilitate his reconnecting with his family.
But when he mentioned the eyes, those beautiful, clear, deep blue eyes…
we both had tears in our own.
There have been a few times I have met homeless people who had those same brilliant eyes; eyes that cause you to see beyond the exterior and look right into their soul; eyes that reminded you of heaven, though everything in your human reasoning would disagree.
Often they seem to know and see more clearly the condition of modern Christianity and the state of our society, expressing sorrow over our materialistic pursuits and lack of real spiritual substance. They are not unkind or critical, just commenting on the need for something deeper and real. You always walk away pondering the truth of what you’ve just heard.
Now I know that this is the exception, but every so often you come across them and it makes you wonder…
Is it possible that some of them are angels in disguise?
Sent here for our benefit to see how we will react to their need?
Could it be that they come to us wrapped in rags, destitute of earthly goods, having nothing to offer save perhaps an chance for us to show compassion and love?
With a message to remind us what this life is really all about, if we will but stop and listen?
