new member -colloid cyst

Hello,
My name is Crystal. I am 28 years old and I was just diagnosed with a colloid cyst they think. I had a CT for sinus problems and my CT revealed a cyst in my sphenoid sinus and a possible colloid cyst in the third ventricle of the foramen of Monro which was faintly hyperdense. I had an MRI which showed nothing at first but after comparison of the CT they went back and located a 3.5 mm hyperdense lesion in the third ventricle on my MRI suggesting a colloid cyst. My doc did not even call me he had his nurse call me with my results just saying it was a benign lesion of the brain. I went and got my report and that is when I found out the size and how they could not find it at first on MRI because sometimes if it is tiny it cannot be visualized via MRI but a CT can see it more. I was like what the heck!! I asked for my doctor to call me cause I have so many questions but he has not. I wonder if I need to see a neurologist? They just want me to follow-up in 6 months with another CT to check for growth and I have to make the appointment myself. If it gets bigger how will I know the difference from a hydrocephalus headache than from just a regular tension or sinus headache. I do have visual disturbanaces a lot, but of course I am a medical transcriptionist and look at the computer screen all day long. I am pretty nervous. After doing some research via the internet on these cysts it scares the hell out of me especially since I have a 3.5 year old son and I am driving him around everywhere. What I want to know is what should I do should I seek out a 2nd opinion and try to get a referral to a neurologist myself or wait out the 6 months with my primary care doc and see what the CT shows. I would appreciate anyone's comments as now I do not feel alone. For these cysts to be so rare there sure are a lot of people out there with them. Look forward to getting responses.

Thanks,
Crystal :)

Hi Crystal,
I had a colloid cyst removed Nov 2000. I had been having very bad headaches, and my pcp diagnosed sinus infection for quite a few months. Finally, he sent me for a CT scan. Cyst was found. He said, "nothing to worry about." Meanwhile, headaches progressively got worse, my family and I moved back to the big city, and life went on as normal until the cyst stopped me in my tracks. I awoke one morning with the "Mother of all Headaches". I went into the bathroom, turned on the light, and could not see from my left eye. I was later told the cyst was pressing on the optic nerve, thus causing the temporary blindness in that eye.

I was sent directly from my neurosurgeons office to the ICU to await him rearranging his schedule for my surgery.

I had a pretty long recovery process, but I am doing very well today. I see you work in the medical field, which can be either a blessing, or a curse. (I am a Nurse, and actually was scared to death of the surgery!)

At the time of my surgery, my son was 7 years old. He was an enourmous help to me after my surgery.

Please ask any qestions you may have. This is a very serious cyst, and I don't understand how there are still doctors out there who don't recognize it! Take Care, Dodi

I'm glad you found us. In my opinion, I think you deserve better answers from your Dr. It might be a good idea to see a Neuro and get his handle on things.

Thanks

It is good hear from someone out there with the same kind of problem. That is so wierd. On Christmas Eve I woke up with my left eyelid swollen. They thought I had a sinus infection and possibly pinkeye but I had no itching just throbbing pains and just pressure behind my eye. I had a headache over my eye in my eyebrow and left temple throbbing but no sinus congestion. I took two rounds of antibiotics and eye drops (which made my eye feel better) but my eyelid was still swollen just not as Rocky Balboa big. Finally it is just now better and normal looking. I knew when the antibiotics did not work there was something up with my eye. I would lay in bed at night with throbbing in my temple so bad that I would have to lay on my right side as I could feel the blood pumping in my temple. I thought that pressure would make it better. They wrote it off as TMJ because I do have that badly but with the cyst in my sphenoid sinus and the colloid cyst both being close to my optic nerve that really makes me wonder with my swelling. I have never had that with my TMJ headaches.

Hi Crystal--

--and welcome to Neurotalk.

Dodi is spot on about the nature of colloid cysts--and the fact that far few doctors recognize them, inasmuch as they are not always symptomatic. When they are, though, it can be like a bolt from the blue.

I think you should find a neurologist anyway--one who knows something about the condition--even if a watch and wait stance is being taken.

To that end, do come visit the Colloid Cyst subforum here (there's good expertise and a lot of empathy):

recovering......and very concerned

I am new to this chat, but lived through the removal of a colloid cyst in the
3rd ventricle. I am post op by a month and a half and NEED to know when to expect to feel like my old self again.
Please help. I have memory loss (short term) and just don't feel like myself at all. Does (did) anyone else have the same feelings post op?? And if so - - how long until there is a light at the end of this horrible tunnel?
Thanks so much for any input.
