Math geniuses needed PLEASE!!
I need help on answering these questions.. if you can help me figure it out i would owe u big time!!
7b is the one we need to know, the others there as you may need to know what was aked of me before #7 6. Notice the spike in the concentration of oxygen around 300 million years ago. What biologic event coincides with this spike? The event that coincides with this spike is The Age of Giant Insects Insects don’t have lungs and rely on the diffusion of oxygen through their exoskeleton. What is the relationship here? 7a. If we compress the approximately 5,000 million years in history of the earth into the length of a day, how many years would each second of this day equal? To do this, you need to find out how many seconds are in a day. 60 sec x 60min x 24hr = sec min hour day day Then, divide that number of seconds per day into the 5,000 million years to get years per second 7b. At what time of this compressed day would Columbus have discovered the New World? Use your answer from 6a to find out how may seconds ago Columbus would have discovered the New World and subtract that number of seconds from 12 midnight to discover what time this happened. (I don't know if he menat to look at 7a, because it doesn't seem to make sense to me to look at 6a, but maybe I am worng.) |
I believe it would be 86,400 divided into the 5000 million. Now give me time on that one but someone else might come up with it quicker.
My calculator won't even go that high. LOL Ada |
:Scratch-Head:do you use all the zeros for the million or is the million just a word in the problem.. cause i started out just using the 5000 and then labling it millions??? I think I am readin way into this.. I hate math theroy!! there is no use for it!!lmao

Hi,
What I am doing is using all of the zero's. When I was in school in the caveman days we were taught how to do long division. When I went to college they tried to teach me the short cuts and I couldn't learn it.
So far I have come up with 5607 something but I am getting my zeros off at the end. This for part a. 5,000,000,000. I am thinking this is the right amount of zeros. I use to be good in math but my brain doesn't work like it use to. Ada |
This is what I got??
I probably cheated, using my daughter's fancy programable calculator....and, I might have confused things by breaking them down the way my brain works.....but;
if there are 60 seconds in a minute, and 60 minutes in an hour, there are 3600 seconds in an hour, and that would mean there are 86400 secons in a day (24 hours). If any of that is wrong,....well...then the rest of this for sure is too! LOL Ok. If there are 86400 seconds in a year....then we have to figure out this "5,000 million" year thing. Right? What I did, was multiplied 1,000,000,000 (one million *correction - 1,000,000 is one million. This is where I got my 3 xtra 0's. LOL) by 5,000. That would give me whatever "5,000 million" years equals, right? So, that is what I did, and what I got was: 5,000,000,000,000 (which I believe is 5 trillion?). [which I got wrong. Scroll down and see the 5 billion that Lil got. I had 3 too many zero's here, and am VERY glad that she put her answer up!! :) ] Now...I used Meghan's fancy TI Programmable calculator for this part, because it was the only one around here that I figured could handle all those zeros! LOL. I divided 5,000,000,000,000 years by the 86400 secs/day as per the directions...and I got: 57870370.37 years/sec (move decimal up 2 places. Scroll down to see correction Lil got) As far as I can figure, that is the answer to your 7a. Now...I seem to have blown a fuse when it comes to the 7b part (about columbus and what not...), but I will keep thinking on it, if someone would come along and tell me if they think that I did this first part right? Hope this has helped out at least a little bit... (((Hugs))) Jose |
still thinking...
Ok...I'm stuck...but this is what I was doing before I got stuck. I might be totally off track....but, I don't know?
Columbus did his thing in 1492. RIght? So, I subtaracted 1492 from 2008, and found that this happened 516 years ago. This is real time, though...not this "all the years of history compressed into one day" time. So....now we just have to figure out what 516 years ago would be on this new time line, and then take that away from your teacher's "midnight". It is looking to me like it is just about midnight.... Hmmmm.:confused: If I was right with the whole 57870370.37 (were you supposed to round off any answers you got?) years/second.....then Columbus just barely discovered the new world, like....not even a second ago? ARGH! Brain cramp! ROFL. Anyway, so far that is my answer; not even a second ago, so >1 sec to midnight. Geesh. I hope that I haven't made things about 10x more confusing then they already were.... ((Hugs)) Jose |
I believe 5,000 million is the same as 5 billion. I have no idea how old the earth was when Columbus sailed. If that was known the answer would be easy. Does anyone know this info? Regards, Lil
PS I calclulated 1 second equals 57,870.37 years |
Yep!!!
Thanks Lil!!
You're right! LOL, I got off by a set of 000's there somehow. So, instead of my 5 trillion that was wrong,,,it is the 5 billion that you came up with. Which would make your 57870.37 years/sec right. But, 516 years ago is still >1 sec on this condensed time line...so I'm still sticking to my final answer for that part. LOL. Thank you so much for correcting that! I just got zero happy there, I reckon! ROFL. Amber....57354.37 is what I got when I took the 516 years away from the 57870.37 years in one second. I don't have a clue as to figure out how much of a second that is. LOL, you will have to let us know if this has helped, or if we were even on the right track here, once you get your answers checked. OK? ((hugs)) Jose |
I'm fascinated with this.
But it's late so I'll just take a shot in the dark and say 3 seconds before midnight. |
OMG thanks guys soo much for helping,,, this is what i got....
7a- 17.28 years per second 86,400/5,000 (bc i thought maybe the millions word was to through us off) and then i took 17.28x516(years ago columbus discovered the new world)=8919.48 and then subtracted 3600 (seconds in an hour, and bc it said midnite and no span so i thought may be he just ment the midnite hour) and got 5316.48 for 7b. ??? but does that number make sense?? its asking me to find a "time" and it doesnt equal even a real year ?? HELP>>llol thanks for all of it too!! brain is in over load and i even dreamed of columbus last nite!! lol :p;) Amber |
