Techno Trash
I could put this in my repurposing thread, but decided it could use a thread of it's own.
I don't want throw my old CD's, DVD's away. Still, what do I do with them. I looked this up and can't seem to find a site where you can dispose of them or recycle them unless you have a lot! I know some people use them for crafts. Anyone have any ideas on clever ways to reuse them or dispose of them? Tootsie |
We keep a few CDs handy for Jesse bird. He loves his reflection, and that's close enough for him. We got him off the porch roof with an old AOL CD once.
There's an idea - if you have birds flying into a window, you could hang a few CDs to scare them off. It would probably work in the vegetable garden or fruit trees too. For old cell phones, there are places that take them for senior citizens and program them so they can use them to call 911 for free (they only get them for emergency). And other places use them for domestic violence shelters. I always drop my old eye glasses off at the post office, where they fix them up for 3rd world countries. |
hear are some ideas I have found well recieved:
I take old CDs, videos, books and magazines to the local senior apartment community(s), assisted living and nursing homes. I also have called the local board on mental retardation and they take them to the group homes. Residents usually dont have a lot of extra cash or visitors, so they LOVE these items. Glasses and hearing aides can be dropped at at the Lions Club (in fact many optomotrist and hearing aid places have drop boxes) Cell phones go right to the wireless store as they coordinate with courts and police to give them to victims. They are programed to call 911 and an emergency contact for emergencies. They charge no fees to the crime victims. Anything else I can help with? jane |
I appreciate these ideas and I've read a few about crafting with your old cds, but I'm not really into the cd crafts!
So...what I'm talking about (and didn't make myself very clear) is what to do with the CD's you often get (unsolicited) in the mail. I got one from a computer teaching site and also from a site that sells cds about various subjects (history, art, etc). These are essentially advertizing tools and nothing anyone would want. I want to know how to safely dispose of them. I read the statistics about how many discs are tossed into the trash, (hence impacting the environment). I do give things away if they are things that I know someone could use. Tootsie |
What a great thread!
Try calling your local community mental health center, or human services departments. At community mental health, they often have several workshops where members would LOVE to be gifted with this type of thing. Also, human services would know the area churches that work with residents in need and I'm sure they would love to have them too...even if not a large amount. Good luck! KD |
If you have any DVD's and CD's that aren't just soliciations, you can always sell them back at Half Price Books. We are lucky to have those stores here and it is a great way to get rid of old books, videos, CD's and DVD's - you get a little bit of cash and they don't end up in a landfill.

I also did see that Circuit City had a recycle box in the store for used cell phones. I know someone else profits from this stuff, but I'm glad they do because that means there is a place to dispose of this stuff safely. I just look at it like 'every little bit helps'. Tootsie |
night before last on the news here, they had a segment about a lady that started a styrofoam recycle center in dallas. they can't do food containers, but the type that stuff is packaged with.
they get truck loads from companies and the public can drop off too. |
