Having Sugery Worried About Pain Management

Hello Everyone,

I have not posted over here in a while. But I have chronic headaches from hydrocephalus.

I am going to have sugery to have all of my teeth pulled and am worried about pain management. Things like Vicoden or Darvacet do not help or give me a rebound headache.

I take Percet for my pain and it really dosent work and they will not give me anything else. I do not go to a Pain Management Doctor because no one willl send me to one and I have not figure out why at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you talked to the dentist/surgeon who will be doing the procedure about post-op pain management?

Who prescribes the Percocet? Can you talk to that doctor about a temporary increase in the percocet or a temporary switch to a diferent medication (maybe something long-acting like OxyContin which has the same ingrediant as percocet but it lasts 8-12 hours instead of 4-6 hours).

Would the dentist/surgeon (whomever is doing the procedure) agree to give you a referral to see a pain management clinic or pain management doctor so that you can get proper pain management in place before the procedure?

What type of medical insurance do you have? Do you NEED a referral in order to see a specialist (like a pain management doctor)? With my medical insurance I do not need a referral, although some specialists want a referral regardless of the insurance rules.

Personally, I would not go forward with any painful procedure/surgery until I had a post-op pain management plan set up and in place.

good luck and take care,
Liz
