Why is the pain in my leg so bad today??

Hi there,
Today my leg has been really painful and I don't know why (the pain is about a 9 and a half on the pain scale), I haven't knocked my leg or anything.
When my mom came in from work I was crying upstairs in my bedroom, which isn't usually like me because I try not to cry (unless someone touches my leg etc)
Could the pain be from the ingrown toenail I have?? My mom has been to the doctors today about it and my doctors asked for a referal for me to see a chiropodist, but I have to wait 2 and a half weeks!!!
Thanks
Alison

Hi Ali,
I'm sorry you are in so much pain today. Don't worry about crying - you need to release your emotions and sometimes you just plain feel better after a good cry!!! I'm sorry you have to wait 2 1/2 weeks for the appointment - waiting is the worst. I'm here if you need to talk - remember you are an amazing girl.

love,
terry

I hope you feel better.

Pain and about anything else can cause a flare up for me.

Can't you get to the ingrown nail to get it out of the skin or cut it? It will come back if you cut it but you may have an infection by the time of the doctor's appointment.

If you didn't have an infection or RSD the best course of action is sometimes using a product like OutGrow which is over the counter at the drug store. I don't think you're supposed to use this if the skin is broken or it's infected.

Ali-
My leg pain can go up and down for no apparent reason at all sometimes. But then sometimes there are some kind of hidden reasons. Cold rainy weather makes my pain a lot worse than normal. A heat pad can sometimes be your best friend! When I was younger I used to get a lot of ingrown toenails (I actually had to have a little surgery on my toenail once) and they would quite often get infected. The first thing is to leave them alone and let grow out to prevent infection. The other thing that my doctor would have me do, infection or not, was to soak my foot in a warm bath of epsom salts twice a day. After the bath, I would dry my foot and apply Neosporin to the area. This would help to prevent or heal whatever infection was present. This routine really helped, and I would really give it a try. The epsom salts will help with the swelling from the RSD too. Hope this helps Ali.

Aww hugs hon.. the weather can spike pain up too.. highs, lows, rain etc. Have you been trying to keep your legs elevated?

I sure hope you are feeling better Ali,
have you read the post on desensitizing? I realy think it would help to try get your sensitivitys down this way, it will mean that you won't have to be so sensitive later.. realy it can be alot worse later if you don't try, I know that sounds mean but I no longer have the screaming touch pain because I touch often the painful areas to desensitize them, I started with very soft things.

please say you will read as much as you can about it, you have been such a trooper through all this I am very proud of you kido.

Oh Ali I am so sorry to hear you are having such a horrible time with your toenail.
2 1/2 weeks is such a long time to wait, can you go to the ER and speed things up
a little that way? I'm not sure how things work there in the UK, but if it is a possibility
I would take advantage of it for sure.

I know your mom said your toenail is infected, can you put some peroxide on it?
Maybe dab some on with a cotton ball until it starts to bubble up, then rinse it off
and do it again until it no longer bubbles up. If you can, it should relieve the pressure
and stop the throbbing. Would be worth giving a try.

Let us know how it goes.

Ali, Sweetie, You are in my prayers! Jesus Loves You!!

Love, Peace & Blessings,
Marla

Hi Ali sweetie,
You are the best and so grown up with everything you have to go through at your age. I just want to give you a hug(((((((((((((((((hug))))))))))))))))). Ask your mum to try some ambesol...the stuff that takes toothache pain away and see what that does...numbsit..not sure what it is called in the UK.

hope you feel better soon.

Hey,
Thanks everyone for the replies everyone, I really appreciate them.

My nurse attatched to the pain team rang my mom this morning - they think that I will have to go to theatre to have the toenail cut out due to the infection and RSD. My nurse is having a word with my pain doctor when he is back at work tomorrow, so hopefully we will know more then. She says that my doctor wants to assess the new spasms I am having in my leg asap.

Imahotep, my moms tried to get the ingrown toenail out but it appears to be too far down to cut plus it is hard because of the hypersenstivity.

Sandel, I have been trying to keep my legs elevated as much as possible. I haven't seen your post yet about the desensitization.

Thanks again everyone I will let you know how I get on
Alison
