feel like something is caught

in my esophagus. Everytime I swallow (saliva, food, or drink) I feel like it catches in my esophagus before moving along. Anyone else ever have this? WHat is it?

a goiter on your thyroid?

yours would have to be bigger than mine though!

Call your PCP to check you out!

I have had same thing

Gigi

I had the same thing last summer for several weeks. It was horrible - I kept coughing and felt like there was something lodged in my throat.

After SEVERAL visits to the doctor as well as the emergency room ( when I was hyperventilating) I was prescribed Reglan. It has helped 95% of the time!

They said I had dysphagia "People with dysphagia have difficulty swallowing and may also experience pain while swallowing. Some people may be completely unable to swallow or may have trouble swallowing liquids, foods, or saliva. Eating then becomes a challenge. Often, dysphagia makes it difficult to take in enough calories and fluids to nourish the body."

It is associated with MS.

I hope it works out for you. It may not be dysphagia - but at least you might ask the doctor if it is?

My best to you
Mo

Mo has offered you some good advice.

I go through periods like this too, especially when I am laying down. I HAVE to sleep on my right side or I will choke.

You should be evaluated.

Gigi,

This morning I woke up and thought OMGoodness!!! Gigi doesn't have a GOITER!!! I was confusing the throat with teh esophagus...I am so sorry!

However, I do think a PCP visit is still in order.

Do you have acid reflux? That can cause raw areas that may "feel" like something is stuck, but actually it just touched the area and irritated it.

Good Luck.

Oh Man Gigi!

That is exactly how I feel and it is because the left side of my throat no longer functions. This was proven out by a test my neuro did on my thoat and watch the back of my throat. Needless to say, she saw NO movement of the muscles on the left side of my throat.

Nothing she can do about it accept to tell me to be aware of it (NO KIDDING!) and be careful eating breads, potatos, french fries, or anything of the same consistancy.

Just be careful you don't get into a choking situation and wash food down with water. Take smaller bites. That's where I have a challenge. I guess I just have a big mouth.

Sorry, Gigi...I hope whatever it is you can get some help. Sounds awful!

Hope it's not what Craig or Reillymo or LadyExpress have. That must be miserable!

I know this doesn't apply to you, but I had that unpleasant choking sensation a few times...when I had to swallow my pride. :D

Maybe we need to be like The Bird and develop a gizzard! Bet she doesn't choke!

Momma's Kids 02-06-2008 12:49 PM

It could be any one of a number of things...I have anxiety and a hiatus hernia...at times it feels as if I am going to suffocate. When I eat it feels like a huge fist has lodged about half way down and the food just sits there, not a good feeling.

I have actually had to throw up because it can get very painful when the food stops moving...no fun either, but works.

Hope you find out soon what is causing this and that it is treatable.

I'm used to swallowing my pride! This is definitely different. I have a call into the doc.
