question on vitiamins

my dd (17) dose not eat red meat and is heavy on the fruits and vegs. she is pretty healthy and fit. she donated blood a couple times but the last 2 times she went her iron was low and was unable to give blood. both times I had her eatting spinach and beans thinking i was keeping her iron good. what is the best way to keep her iron up?
she dose take a teen vitamin but nothing else. should she be taking an iron supplement...or is there food besides red meat that is really good for iron intake????? our gp said just a teen vitamin should work but it isn't. so any info would be appreciated and very helpful to mom and dd. Thanks a bunch .Ill check back later.
Peace
BMW

I am not sure on the supp. Does she take a multi vitamin cause I take 1 a day and it has iron. Also not being a big meat eater eiether I look for fortified cereals. Some have a higher amount so she may like that for breakfast. Random ? does she eat balanced though too. I know you said she is healthy and fit and high fruit and veggies but does she also get in whole grain, healthy fats, and lean protein/dairy? Also how is her period caue I saw on Oz people who have heavy periods may have iron issues. Sorry not much more help

Hi BMW,

I am in my 40's but hae low iron due to heavy menstrual periods. But I did eat a lot of red meat and it was still low. Plus i had endometriosis so there was bleeding from that as well.

So I take an iron supplement everyday with 1000mcg of Vitamin C. My gyn said its rather common for permenopausal women to have to supplement. I got my iron from Walgreens called feosol.

Also iron I have read is hard to absorb, something about it being a large molecule?? Not sure.

There is also a prescription iron out there called repliva

Are your DD's periods heavy?

she dose not have a heavy flow and yes she eats whole wheats grain and fiber but I think maybe it is hard to absorb. I will check out the link mrsd. ;)thanks for the info.
and thanks for this help ya all. I eat meat so my dd has me in unfamiliar grounds. and the help is needed.
Peace
