Recovering from a heart attack lack of oxygen

Hi, my dad is recovering from a heart attack, he was brought back to us but he was out for at least 5 min. He now has hypoxia (lack of oxygen supply) to the brain. He is just starting to show signs of response after 5 days now in the hosp. But still does not respond to commands, does not focus yet. He is just in & out. Doc's said that time will tell how much brain damage there is when he wakes up.
The brain stem & bottom part of the brain is working fine, its the top part of the brain that controls the upper arms is resting. So does anyone know of anyone that has gone through this & woke up & functioned?

Dear Dad's Brain,

The range of how your dad may do is wide and depends on lots of factors -- most of which aren't understood. He could recover and seem normal or close to it within a few weeks. He could have issues that stick with him over time. His recovery could be long and slow.

Here's the one thing I know: brain injury causes permanent damage, but the brain is highly adaptable and can create new pathways. You are early days into this (though I imagine it seems like eons!).

Feel free to pm or email me. Or my website is BrainInjuryChaplain[dot]com.

Blessings,
Patrick

Sending you some hugs and prayers. I too have no clue what kind of recovery you can expect. But I believe that what you pray for and
work for can bring you much success.

We are here if you need us.

Donna
