Anyone on here into horses?
 

Hi I am new to this forum and new to TN.

My life pretty much revolves around my obsession with horses in general and my horse (dressage) in particular. I would love to find others with a similar interest and of course swap notes on getting around some difficulties. Thanks Louise

I grew up with ponies and then horses and still have a pretty but bratty pasture ornament.
I only did 4H, trail riding and a few fun shows, western & bareback.
I do love to watch the high level dressage videos - awesome movements.

I have a black warmblood mare Phoenix who I do dressage on. She is the love of my life (well I guess OH and daughter fit in there too). I ride about 4 times per week. One of my major worries at the moment (probably naive thinking on my part) is that I won't be able to continue riding particularly once winter comes (I am in Australia, so very hot atm). I know that compared to the concerns of most on here this is pretty minor but so long as I can be with my horse I feel I can cope mentally with most things.

So what's your horse like? Does she/he live with you? I would love to live with mine but live close to Melbourne so for practical reasons she is agisted about 40 minutes drive away.

I also have a border collie, Cody and a cat Sarah. I had another cat, Wanda but sadly she died 2 weeks ago :(. It has been a really bad couple of weeks for me.

I love horses and ponies, but unfortunately I have never owned one. :mad: I do however own a 6 month old springer spaniel, 3 hamsters, an African grey parrot, chameleon, chinchilla and some fish.:)

Hi ladies:

I've got an old yard ornament. (affectionately called the Y/O) She's a 15 yr old Paint mare. Had 2 beautiful paint fillies when she was younger. She's retired now, living the easy life, except for giving the grandkids rides in the yard.

The only work she knows is being ridden to the pasture where the cows are and then outsmarting them to get them headed to the catch pen. She's 16 hands and bay in color. Got her nick name "yard ornament" cause during the summer I put temporary electric fence around the back yard and let her roam it and graze on the grass. I go out on the deck in the morning and have my coffee with her. (when we don't have cold weather) The only reason she's retired is because of my disabilities. Hubby doesn't ride.

My sis had a warmblood, Wallazan, He was a Dutch WB. Almost needed a step ladder to hop on. He was trained in dressage but had quite an attitude and she wasn't experienced enough to handle him. I'm not sure where he is now.

Hi Farm Wife. I don't have horses now, but when my daughter was growing up my sister bought her a very wild, young Arabian. His name was Cochise. We paid to have him trained but he just never was fit for her to ride. Scared me. He must have been abused at some point.

We sold him and bought a Palamino quarter pony, Retts Golden Boy. He was such a love and a beautiful horse. She showed him in 4-H and rode him like the wind. (Scared me half to death when she did!) When he was in shows, we always had to prove he was a quarter pony, not a quarter horse, as he was so big. He just came in under the allowable hands for a pony.

He was such a sweetie. However, as daughter grew into teenage years he was very ignored. And it was costing a pretty penny to keep him boarded and fed with nobody paying any attention to him. So we sold him, much to her disappointment.

Your baby sounds like she has a wonderful life there with you. How nice it must be to sit on the porch sipping coffee and watching her really enjoy retirement! :hug:

As a teen I got a 3 yr old Palomino gelding {AQHA/Tennessee Walker} he was awesome! I had him for the rest of his life, had to put him down at age 24.
My mare I have now is a 16 yr old 14.2 nearly black coffee colored pinto breeding stock {no spots} she has a pointy star on her forehead and 2 white feet.
Her sire was a son of Sonny Dee Bar {AQHA} and dam was a tri colored pinto { arab/qtr x}
We have a couple acres so she is here at home and I can look at her out the windows any time.

OMG she is 16 already and I still haven't really ridden her except for around the corral - she bucks if you press her!:eek:
Good thing she is very pretty or I would have sold her a long time ago- I keep hoping she will mellow out:o

does she have a pinch or a rub somewhere under the saddle? if it doesn't fit right it may be uncomfortable when she moves out.

I tried 3 diff saddles , blankets, bareback & pad.

she's very snorty and hyper sensitive to all kinds of things.
snorts, whistles, blows, prances like a stud almost sometimes

The vet just blames it on the Arabian blood from her dam :)

I read a book by Linda Tellington Jones that talked about the telling the personality of a horse by the features of the horses face and the profile of the head.
well her theory really fit my mare.

my mare-
3 uneven & offset swirls on the forehead:eek:
tapered defined nose, chin and tight lips
eyes will narrow when she is stressed and have tightness around them
nice defined ears but tapered to a point
{basically these all point to an unstable, easily excitable & unreliable personality.}

my old gelding had a nice centered swirl, nice shaped but squarish nose and chin, soft relaxed mouth, soft wide ears, soft relaxed eyes
