tax question?????

A question about the tax rebate.
You know the one for married folks and you get 300 per kid and the elderly are to get some$ too. Well my mother who is in her 80s didn’t know this but as I under stand
If you do not file taxes this year you wont get any rebate even if you qualify. You must file to get it. My mother hasn’t filed taxes for a good few years as she is collecting social security. And dose not makes enough money to file, so she dose not file. So if any of you are like her. Remember to file this year so you can get the rebate. If I am wrong on this fact PLEASE let me know as I don’t want to cause trouble for anyone. I had my mom do her taxes today, my sister helped her as I am in another state.
Peace

Burnt ... you were listening!! that's EXACTLY the 'trick' line they were saying - for all those that have FILED for 2007 would be eligible ... because they are getting their numbers from the IRS to send out the rebates!

I think this is definitely a farce ... and am looking into it a bit more - I have a feeling is that they are trying to do one of those 'mess with our minds' during tax season (and I prepare alot of returns) ... and I'm still trying to understand it ... and WHY they do this during the craziest time for the IRS ...

and - are they looking at updating addresses for more mailings ...

this is taken from the www.irs.gov site: Feb 8, 2008

"While these people may not be normally required to file a tax return because they do not meet the filing requirement, the IRS emphasizes they must file a 2007 return in order to receive a payment. Recipients of Social Security, certain Railroad Retirement and certain veterans’ benefits should report their 2007 benefits on Line 14a of Form 1040A or Line 20a of Form 1040.

Taxpayers who already have filed but failed to report these benefits can file an amended return by using Form 1040X. The IRS is working with the Social Security Administration and Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure that recipients are aware of this issue."

remember - MAY they are already increasing the postal rate too!
