Work credits for SSD
My wife doesnt have enough credits to file SSD, is there anyway to work around this? Long story short many medical issues over a 15 year period with working for a year and then no work. She was denied two years ago for not enough credits and again this year. Her condition is worsening and now is not able to work at all. Our income is over 3000 (in military) is a divorce the only option for SSI?

hey hon, sorry for your trouble
Not sure if I'll have any suggestions for you that will be helpful or not. But thought I'd take the bull by the horns and just give ya what I know.
First off, I'm assuming that the medical conditions are/were pre-existing, so therefore uncovered by your personal military insurance. If for some reason, it is the cost of insurance that is prohibative, then you can look into the possibility of state medical insurance due to financial hardship, or even a spend down plan, that can cut medical bills. You could even as a last resort, consider consolidating all of your medical bills into one statement from each doctor/hospital, and then making a minimum payment of 5 dollars per month. If you've tried all those avenues, then I suggest writing to your congressmen, mayors and senators.... this is an election year and health care is a big issue. I would also suggest contacting your local news networks. Not sure if it had any impact, but we had contacted the local news network about a census they were taking during local election time, and they came out to the house to interview us about the census question, and then came out again when health care cuts had been announced, and did a story on my case, lack of personal health insurance, the fact that we were in the initial stages of my SSA application, and the fact that the SS Office had told us, that if we were turned down by SSDI and SSI, that our only hope of getting help was to get a legal separation. After that, things flew toward a Mental CE, and approval of my initial application. I credit The Grace of God, and the local media for winning my case for me. Up until that time, the only current medical records I had were from my opthamologist. All my other medical had stopped in early 2002, when I couldnt keep working anymore, and wound up loosing my medical insurance. I hope you can find the help you need. God Bless you and yours!!!!
