bone density test vs bone scan
 

Hi,
I had a bone density test on my hands and the results were positive. That meant i had bone loss in my hands. My doc then ordered a hip and spine bone density test for me and the result were within normal. The doc confirmed that i had RSD in my hands. My question is what is the difference bet bone density test and the bone scan. Do i need a bone scan to confirm RSD in my hands. I try to avoid any needle to my hands if possible? Will my bone density test in my hands sufficient to offer a more objective finding beside the symptoms and signs and response to nerve block? Will the bone scan offer me any important additional information?

Bone scans show increased and decreased blood flow to the bones, they do not require needles in the hand, though you do get an injection for it in one arm. The tripple phase bone scan is more specific but like most of these tests it depends on one side to be the 'controll" or normal side to compare it to.

These tests lend suport to a diagnosis but is not the only thing considered. Same with blocks they can be used to help diagnose but negative results do not mean you do not have RSD, the more features of RSd and trest results sugestive of RSd that you have the more they consider it a definate dx but signs and symptoms are what RSD is generaly diagnosed with.

Ok I just did some more research and there are many ocurances of Bilateral involvement showing up on a TP bone scan.. sory my bad.
