why plugins?

I have a question. Why do I keep running into "You need plugins to view this." etc.
Then when I try to get these "Plugins," here come the most dreaded words we all were scared of on report card day, YOU FAILED! What? All I did was what I was told to do and now you tell me I can't. I never noticed this plugin business
a short time ago. Why is it such a big deal now?
When I go fishing I always bring my bait, so now when I go Computering I bring my own plugins?

I have a similar problem when I need to use Microsoft's IE browser for daughter's online school.
They had video clips and live lessons - I always have to reinstall the plug in for it and sometimes it doesn't work!

I haven't figured out what the problem is, I'm thinking it must be something with cookies, security settings or my spyware, AV or firewall...

Maybe someone will stop in and give us both some ideas....:p
