neoropathy and arthritis

Hi all,
I have neuropathy, osteoarthritis, bad health insurance and have not worked outside the home except for helping family and friends with their housework for more than 20 years. Husband doesn't make a lot of moola. Is there any relief financially other than SSI. I don't believe I would qualify because of not being employed outside the home for so long. Thanks for any input. I'm new to this and am soo glad I found this place.

Hi Vickie! :Wave-Hello: Welcome to NeuroTalk!

You may want to look into whether you have accumulated any earned income credits within the Social Security system. If you have ever worked on the books, you would have been making contributions.

What you are calling SSI, I think, you mean social security disability coverage. In my state, "SSI" is a state-level Supplemental Security Income which is a monthly cash allowance which, I think, is meant to be temporary.

If your doctor has indicated that you are disabled and has documented this, there are many programs to assist you, but most will be on the state or county level.

You might find some tips in our Social Security forum here: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum28.html

Hi Vickie,

Welcome to the group.

I was on SSI for over 10 years due to my lawyer letting my time lapse for SS that I had worked for. After my husband passed 17 months ago I ended up on SS. SSI isn't really temporary. It stays as long as you are disabled.

I hope you stick around.

Ada
