Should family members have MRI'S?
 

My annie was clipped 6 years ago. When my sister went to her Dr. he had an MRI done immediately. I cannot talk my brother into having one done.
My children are in their mid 20's and I was told they should have one done around 30. My grandfather died from a ruptured aneurysm. Should I encourage them to have one done?

I'm not an expert on aneurysms by any stretch of the imagination, but I recall reading recently that there appears to be a hereditary component.

My father died of a ruptured AAA 20+ years ago, and I'm personally considering having an MRI done.

You might want to do a little research on the hereditary component. Maybe that would help you convince your brother to have the MRI.

screening, whether with MRI or CT, should be considered only in families with at least two 1st degree relatives with intracranial aneurysms. Your grandfather doesn't count since he is not a 1st degree relative. Remember, only aneurysms in the brain count. Aneurysms in other parts of the body are not related to brain aneurysms.

what do u mean by First Degree relatives? My mom's mom died in her fourties of a brain aneurysm... As to helping out with someone's question before: Yes, aneurysms are hereditary. If you go to webmd.com you can look it up. They say some who are more at risk for aneurysms are women, and those who have had relatives with aneurysms (also african women). However, I am not of african descent. (I am not noting this because I am racist or anything like that, just saying).

Now dunno how true this is but I have read it somewhere if you have more than one aneurysm on one artery those are the hereditary ones if there is only one then they are not, I had two one on either side of the brain one ruptured the other did not but I have had them both clipped. Jess.

My mom also has a brain annie, her doctors highly recommend we all get scanned.

Have you been scanned yet? My mam died of an ruptured aneurysm ten years ago, my brother had a rupture three years ago he's ok now, I had a scan in November they found i had a 5mm aneurysm, i go for it clipped 16th Jan 2009 so i'm pleased i had the scan at least they are doing something before it ruptures.:)

I told all people on my dad's side of famly, what they do with it is there problem. My daughter has been tested but son is in his teens. A few more years for him. Thank God my daughters came back normal at this time.
