Speaking of English...
Two things that are VERY frustrating to me these days:
Writing the written word. English was my favorite subject in school. I have always been THE person in my circle(s) to call for grammar advice or just the right word. Now I go back and read something I've written (or posted) and see mixed tenses, spelling errors, missing punctuation...it's enough to make me cry. The other thing is recognizing the SPOKEN word. That's your basic cog fog manifesting itself as "English as an alien language". Someone will speak to me, and it's as though my brain has to translate it into English before I can comprehend it--even though it's ALREADY in English! Grrrrr. Language was always my friend. Now it's laughing at me. It isn't funny! |
b2u....try talking to a 14 yr old girl. they really do talk like the cell phone commercial. i don't let her text and she still does it.

What's really, like, mortifying is when I, like, hear myself talking that way! :(
|
i just about fell over the first time she said I Heart You.
:Scratch-Head: they really do say L-O-L. |

Snappoutofvit!!!!!! Don't go to the dark side!!!!! I confess that, I too, find myself at a loss for words that were once mundane members of my vocabulary.:o |
Speaking of "ENGLISH"
Oh, I thought this was about ME!!!!!!:D

It's really sad that I cant talk to anyone under the age of 30 without having to have a translator next to me. (I'm going to be 39 in may)
I can sort of understand stuff when I see Text-ese on the internet, but if someone is speaking it to me, I just want to smack them. It's easier for me to talk to someone speaking Spanish (which I only know a few phrases in) than talk to someone speaking Text-ese. I only know two languages. English and American Sign Language (and I'm starting to forget the ASL) I dont mind if someone is speaking a foreign language so much, even tho I think everyone here should at least understand English, but I cant stand it that there are people out there who insist on actually verbally speaking in Text-ese. I can actually remember when there wasnt an internet, but just local bulletin boards. We typed out in the same Text-ese that's used today (heck, my generation probably created today's Text-ese...and I'm sorry about that) We didnt continue to speak in Text-ese when we left our computers to go meet up in the Real World (otherwise known as the pizza restaurant downtown where we all met once a month) |
Yep.
Communication and all it's rules. What a crock!:o |
b2u I can totally relate I sit there and look at a word and cant recall if thats correct or not, drives me nuts and now
my newest thing fingers are not doing what my mind suggest so spell check is a must now, never claimed to be a genius, but articulate I could lay some claim to, not anymore. Words are out of order or misspelled, unfinished sentences or thoughts a regular einstein here lately, its driving me nuts and as my family will vouch (sp?) thats already a short drive |
Blessings2You,
I really wanted to type out Blessings TO You, but took note of the spelling of your choice of name to post under. I've posted to you before and have come close to it with B2Y!! I cannot count the number of times I have had to go back to a poster's name and type it out as they do, I always reach for the correct sounding proper spelling first. My mother was a stickler for correct spelling and language. To this day, I am aware of every time I use slang and how to correctly spell out the stupid slang! As you may remember, a few years ago there was a movement to recognize Ebonics as a separate whole English language. At the time, I was planning on becoming an English teacher. I literally gave up that path due to that decision by the Oakland CA school district. I edit almost every post, because whether I check it before or not, I always find a spelling error or a punctuation mark out of place when it shows. I just got a spellchecker and I used it for the first time tonight. It said "Blessings" was spelled incorrectly. I deleted it. :D You are not alone! |
