Omega 3 questions

It is so frustrating not to be able to look things up from the old forums!

Mrs. D....do you have other links on Omega 3? My question has to do with the difference between fish oil and flax for Omega 3. We ran out of my mail away supply and I went to CVS to check out what they had. I was in a hurry and quickly looking things over and grabbed the fish oil. I glanced at the flaxseed oil (which was cheaper BTW) and saw that it was Omega 3, too. Is there a big difference? I assume no fish burps with Flax?

What do you think?

Thanks.

Take care,
Tessa

Hi Tessa :)

yes, flaxseed oil is a rich source of omega 3 EFA tho fishoil is usually preferred. Some people with TS seem to get increased tics from fishoil (my son is one of those) and so for them flaxseed oil is a great alternative

mrsD has an excellent EFA 101 thread on the Vitamins forum here too

Hi Chemar,

Thanks! I am running out but will chek out Mrs. D's info. I suppose this is in there but why is Fish Oil preferred over Flax?

My older son (with TS) has given up his supps at college-though he may choose to use them while home. His stomach has been bothering him a bit and I kinow the supps help him.

But my younger guy takes a vitmain daily and I'd like to get him back on Omega 3's-he hates that fish burp, though. I think I will try the flax-no aftertaste?

Take care,
Tessa

HI Tessa,

There are some fish oil brands that are entertic coated. Not sure with TS if that is ok but absolutely no fish burps.

I am pretty sure, without re-reading the thread yet:o, so not certain that mrsD covers the DHA?EPA that make fish oil preferred as a source of omega 3, Tessa

My son and I use pure organic flaxseed oil supplements and also grind fresh flaxseeds for use with salad dressings, cereals etc
No aftertaste re the capsules and a delish taste for food. I have also started eating a lot of kashi stuff and love the Kashi flax/raisen/oatmeal cookies and some good organic breakfast cereals doing flaxseed mixes now too

there is a post...

on the Vitamin forum with the neurological differences between fish oil and
flax for TS...

Let me see if I can find it....

Here it is:

at this thread:

Does this help? There is something about TS specifically that some TSers don't do well on fish oil... that article explains why.

There are more omega-3s (flax) in food now. Smart Balance peanut butter, Smart Balance Mayo, and I even just
found chicken nuggets at Costco made with Canola claiming 300mg of flax/serving. So as the food industry puts them in
common items, reliance on capsules as a supplement will be less.
