mixed state ....dysphoric mania
Mixed state
Main article: Mixed state (psychiatry) In the context of bipolar disorder, a mixed state is a condition during which symptoms of mania (or hypomania) and clinical depression occur simultaneously (for example, agitation, anxiety, fatigue, guilt, impulsiveness, insomnia, disturbances appetite, irritability, morbid and/or suicidal ideation, panic, paranoia, psychosis, pressured speech, indecisiveness and rage). [5] In at least 1/3 of persons with bipolar disorders, the entire attack--or a succession of attacks--occurs as a mixed episode. Mixed states can be the most dangerous period of mood disorders, during which panic attacks, substance abuse, and suicide attempts increase greatly. A dysphoric mania consists of a manic episode with depressive symptoms. Increased energy and some form of anger, from irritability to full blown rage, are the most common symptoms. Symptoms may also include auditory hallucinations, confusion, insomnia, persecutory delusions, racing thoughts, restlessness, and suicidal ideation. Alcohol, drugs of abuse, and antidepressant drugs may trigger or aggravate dysphoric mania in susceptible individuals. |
horrible way to go through the day
Hi,
This is the state I lived in before dx. And it is the state I lived in after dx for 4 years thanks to the Lithium and the tricylics I was on. I was unable to explain to the pdoc was what happening. I didn't know the vocab. And back in the late 80/early 90s pdocs didn't know as much about mixed states as they do now. It was awful. I am sorry for anyone who can relate to this. Mari |
that sounds like an awful place to be for 8 years.....

Hi,
I went back and counted years again. I was in a mixed state when I was dx'd but I had not been sick very long. I was under a pdoc's care for almost 5 years and still in a mixed state. That was horrible. We tried every drug availble to us. It was matter of ruling out possibilites. Mari |

sigh... yup
me to a T.
Mari, I'm so sorry you lived in that so long and even with the terms, i have incredible difficulty explaining... then again maybe because i don't know all the terms in italian . Bizi, are you dysphoric now? I also have doubts as to some of what is termed "rapid-cycling" history actually being variances within a mixed state. (I have had "clean" rapid cycling and that's different.) I would bet this type of episode is more "tenacious" than others. In fact it is exceptionally hard to medicate. Lithium often does not work. ok, so where's the mixed state icon? howabout a blender? :D |
Verapamil
Dear Waves,
Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, worked for me. We tried nearly every mood stabilizer in the book and out of the book that was available. I'm still on it. I'm not happy at all about the brain fog. Actually, I'm very much not happy about the brain fog. But the mixed state is gone. The basic combo (with addititions and modifications every once in a while) was Wellbutrin, Klonopin, Verapamil. Mari |
