Central Nervous System is shutting down...
 

I posted earlier a little rant that I had about a Neurosurgery Institute. Well, I moved on... rapidly!!!

I have gone to an Internist that has done blood work, a Nerve Conduction Test of my Cervical and Lumbar Spine, and a Circulation test. The results are in.

The results alone indicate that it is from an individual with severe trauma to their neck and back. VERY severe. Like, multiple car accidents, drop ya on your head type thing... only, I have had no trauma. Apparently, my nerves are close to none existent in my neck and (as expected) in my lower back.

Neurologically speaking, my central nervous system seems to be shutting off.

He also found that I have a B-12 deficiency. I'm being treated.

I'm scared that I have MS or another neurological disease.

I'm in the process of fighting for an MRI of my brain (Insurance Companies...) But all I can do is wait and wait some more.

PLEASE... if you have ANY thoughts on this let me know! I'm worried and trying to just keep positive and keep laughing...

I dunno; trauma, to me, can take place in various forms and without total awareness that it's even happening at the time. I don't think that it has to result from, say, an auto. accident; it could also be from childhood "games," sports, whacking one's head against a shelf or even clothing rod in a closet/running into an object, a fall, etc. Trauma can encompass, I think, the type of events that happen but that people may have a tendency to put aside shortly after the initial pain subsides.

Do you mind if I ask: Will the MRI be done with contrast? and why are you thinking about the possiblity of MS? Has a doc brought that up? If so, and just to be thorough for the sake of being thorough, I'd want the contrast/dye.

I truly wouldn't worry myself about it; it's premature and there'll be ample time for that later if it's called for. I just wouldn't torture myself.

I know it's difficult; I've been where you are now. Please, though: Continue to do as you have been and try not to let it consume you. If you have hobbies, immerse yourself.

I agree with Bobbi. A brain MRI with contast is what I would be asking for.

But I am a bit confused. I am not sure what you mean by the nerves being nonexistent in your neck and back. A B-12 deficiency can cause neuropathy. Is that what you are speaking of? Are the nerves dying back? What specifically did the doc say?

I went back over your first post and saw where you spoke of the spinal issues, anxiety, etc.

And just so that you might rest a bit easier. I have had all that testing...brain scans looking for MS and more than once. Anyway, just everything. I do have central sensitization or central pain syndrome which is a result of nerve damage. But I am trying to manage it.

So, as Bobbi said, I would just try to find some distractions while you wait. She's right, do not torture yourself...your anxiety will go sky high. I have been there too and it is hard not to let your mind run wild with all kinds of thoughts.

I apologize...I missed your earlier post...but why is an Internal Medicine doc doing these tests instead of either a Pain Managment doc, Neurologist, or Neurosurgeon...just curious...:confused: Just know too, that whatever diagnosis he gives you....I would head to a very well known teaching institution for a second opinion....

I did have the MRI with contrast and took your GREAT advice!! :) :)

Worrying is going to get me nowhere! I try to stay as upbeat as possible and I was in pity-party mode ... thank you for your response and it helped snap me back to reality.

Yes, my doctor did bring up MS... but I'm not going to worry. Worry = Pain and that is NEVER good!!!

Thank you for your reply. I am just confused about what could cause the amount of pain I'm in and the test results from the Nerve Conduction. Dr. mentioned MS, but I really don't have other issues. B-12 seems to explain the numbness, but not the weird pains all around... but noone has every mentioned a central neuropathy. Thank you - that helps me worry less! I did take Bobbi's advice and quite worrying. Worry = Pain and that isn't good. So thank you too for the support and help. Your information is VERY helpful!!!

Oh, thank you for the reply. The internist is doing the tests because I had nowhere to go. My insurance completely changed and left me high and dry with nowhere to go. My primary doc is in clinic... long and weird story there ;) So, he is going to do the MRI, and then decide whether I should go to a Neurologist or Pain Management Doc. - he's willing to change my meds, but agrees that it's a good idea for someone in that specific field to go to. Sadly, my insurance is horrible and can't afford to go to a teaching institute - but can probably muster the cash. My hubby is VERY understanding and supportive so we could work it out. But I'm definitely finding diversions so I don't worry!!!

Is the internist also doing an EMG? For nerve testing, I've seen others (doctors state) that it's a "gold standard" and can be more telling than NCV (alone).
