Researchers find enzyme linked to Parkinson's
The Yomiuri Shimbun

A team of researchers led by Prof. Takeo Kato at Yamagata University's Faculty of Medicine recently discovered an enzyme that is closely connected with the development of Parkinson's disease. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Neuroscience, a U.S. science journal.

If medicines are developed that can inhibit the functions of the enzyme, it may be possible to prevent the development of the disease and slow the progress of the symptoms, the researchers said.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by body tremors and rigidity of the arms and legs. It is an illness of the nervous system caused by a lack of neural transmitter substances in the cerebrum.
