Lyrica and weight gain - fact or fiction?

I don't know if it's just coincidence or from the Lyrica, but it seems like I am really starting to pack on the pounds. I haven't been eating any differently since last fall before my foot surgery.

Anyone else have probs with weight gain while on Lyrica? I'm taking 500mg per day......

Or could it just be from inactivity since I can't be up and around on my feet alot?

I've gotta do something. I've gone up two pant sizes in the past year.

Any suggestions how to get a good workout when you can't walk, jog, run, hop or squat because of an RSD foot?

Most everyone I know that has taken Lyrica has had weight gain. It's a sad thing but most of the meds given us like lyrica, neurontin, antidepressants, one of the biggest side effects is weight gain. A close friend of mine, also has rsd, has gained quite a bit of weight because of the lyrica. Now me...I'm the one you live to hate because I've always been skinny but now I'm severely underweight which is in it's way unhealthy too. BUT I am also on lyrica, have been for 4 months now. I'm still waiting for the weight gain part to catch up!! *taps foot impatiently* LOLOL I really could stand to gain quite a bit and nothing. Just figures huh?

Short of getting off the lyrica there's nothing to be done, especially if your diet hasn't changed and the weight gain began after starting lyrica. Topomax is what some call the "weight loss" drug because it's side effect is weight loss. That's really nice if you've gained because of either other drugs and/or our inability to exercise. It might be something to look into. As with any other thing, drug, treatment, etc....it might not help. It's something that of course needs to be talked over with your doc and see what he/she thinks about it. My friend tried to switch from lyrica to topomax and as soon as she stopped the lyrica the burning came back on her really, really bad!! In just 2 weeks she went back on the lyrica again. That's a good example of how it might or might not work.

Hugs,

Karen

Hi, Happy Mothers Day.

I wanted to say, I took the Lyrica just for a few days and started gaining. I gained 5 lb. really quick and am having a time getting it back off. I went back in and told my Dr. I wouldn't take it. I lost 75 lb. over 10 years ago and sure don't want to gain it back.

If you have any other health problems that weight gain can effect then it's something to think about.

I have started walking again and working hard to get this weight back down. What I have noticed, most people say they gain around 30 lbs. on it.

I know though a lot of you are in a lot worse shape RSD wise then I am now at this point so I do know it's a hard call.

Have a great day.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because when I was on Lyrica, I didn't gain weight & I've been on Neurontin since the fall & am still holding steady at 136. Granted, I live on 1 meal a day & Hershey Kisses, but so far, so good. (I just wish the Neurontin would get rid of all the pain)

I was on Lyrica for 5 days and gained 5 lbs. I was warned about it ahead of time so I stopped it at that and went back to my pain med. this was for nerve pain b/c of a disc problem, before I had the surgery to correct it.

If you google Lyrica + weight + gain you should find others with the same issue.

Definitely FACT for me. I was only on it for five weeks and gained 21pds. Came off of it and it was hard for me to lose the weight but I have done it.

I also noticed that since I have came off of Verapamil (for Migraines) that I have lost an additional 10 pounds. I didn't know that you gained weight with that. Should have figured since over the last six months I have gained almost 40-45 pounds.

Hopefully the pounds will keep coming off...

Easy one,, four letters.. FACT!

Yep and hard to lose the weight afterwards too.
Lyrica also was the cause of bad thoughts, catastrophising, thoughts of suicide.. when your emotions and mindframe changes look to your meds, drugs of this type can cause these symptoms. and my symptoms improved alot after stoping the lyrica.

Lyrica Weight Gain - Fiction!

Lyrica Literally Did Nothing To Me And I Went Through All The Levels Of It From 75 to 150 to 200 (each level i took 2x daily). Some Might Say Its Cause I Am 18, Have A Family History Of Being Slim, I Have A Fast Metabolism And Than I Myself Have Crohns Disease But Overall Lyrica Was In My Medical Opinion A Waste Of My Insurances Money. Its A Worthless Pill.

Oh I Forgot It Did Do One Nasty Little Thing I Had The Rare Side Effect Or Reaction Whatever You Want To Call It That It Started Detearating Some Of My Heart Muscle Cause When I Was In The Hospital For Another Attack From The RSD With The Nerves Around My Heart Back Towards The End Of April. The Blood Test They Do To Show If You Have Had A Heart Attack Theres Usually Very Tiny Pieces Of Muscle In The Blood And When They Found That They Thought I Did Have A Heart Attack But It Wasn't It Was Just From

A little off-subject about weight gain because I have no experience with Lyrica. But in regards to exercise with a "bum" foot, I have the same problem. Any weight on my foot and I am in real pain.

My primary doctor suggested swimming. Sounds like a good idea because you can exercise with no weight bearing down.

Of course the drawback is that most of us don't have a swimming pool at our disposal! But if there is any possibility of regular swim, it might help. I have tried it when traveling and can get a good workout.
