NEW ...DNA testing for vitamin supplements...
I just got off the phone with Solgar (a huge manufacturer of vitamin products).
We have a continuing thread here about methylfolate (MetaFolin) so the information is there at the last post. I won't repeat it here: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread17913.html In essence there is a new DNA test in place to identify genetic failures in certain nutrients. Methylfolate is one, with the methylation failures already identified. This test can only be sold at stores who have been especially trained in giving it and interpreting it. The only place in Michigan that does this test so far is close to my doctor's office. So next Wednesday, I will be swinging by there and checking it out, as I have an appointment then. (saving gasoline etc). I called and the test costs $125 and is a cheek swab. They have printed material which I will pick up and look over as well. This looks very similar to the P450 enzyme (liver drug metabolism) tests which are now available as well. Only this one is less expensive. You have this test run YOURSELF...no doctor needed, and no insurance coverage. This looks exciting to me. For those who can afford the test, it may be very revealing. A marketing person is due to call me back tomorrow. But I thought I could do this post at least since some public posting on the net has already been done. IF you do a search on Nutrigenomx Solgar there are other internet sites with information too. But Solgar has not put this on their website yet. |
mrsd... 20% payraise! I take several vitamins each day and would love to find one of these tests to see if I really need them or not or have a valid defficiency.
Thanks for the info. |
Now
That I have had a few minutes to think about it...
I do think the test will be limited to "what we know so far" about genetics. Since medical research is constantly changing, this test may change in the future and become more complete. I discussed this with my husband and he is all for me having it run. So I will look at the items measured and see if they are worth $125 to discover. He has read about this already in his Wall Street research, only he didn't know that it impacted the consumer directly yet...so HE DIDN"T TELL ME! How do you like THAT? :yikes: I expect it to include this: http://www.kimballgenetics.com/tests-mthfr.html Alot of research including the development of methylfolate revolves around the MTHFR failures. I hope to find out OTHER systems that will be measured too. This test does NOT detect blood levels, and cannot measure deficiency. It does not matter what you are taking at the time, since only DNA is being looked at. (genes). So it is not a COMPLETE profile of what you may need. You may not be absorbing your nutrients, or your drug therapies may be depleting you. Those types of issues are not genetic, but are situational. |
