Mrs. D: hubby's ENT told him to take 300 mgs vit B 1

Hello,
My husband saw an Otolaryngologist today.

I didn't go with him, but this is what he told me:

The doc repaired a very tiny hole (maybe pin sized) in one of his ear drums with a piece of tape and some foam to hold the tape and told him to take 300 mgs of B1 a day and come back in six months.

(She said that the hole was probably from a childhood injury that had mostly healed years ago.)
She told him that B1 works to help the nerves.

I give him a multi vit and and multi B from New Chapter Organics about twice a week when I remember.

Does 300 sound about right? And do you think he needs to call the doc back about whether or not he needs it every day for the next six months?

Thanks.
Mari

yes...

That is the typical dose for nerve damage.

Thiamine is not toxic, so nothing serious can happen.

There is a BETTER form, called benfotiamine. We have a thread on PN on page 1 right now about it. I used to take the thiamine, but have switched to the newer form which is better because it is lipid soluble.

I fail so see what the ear drum hole and the nerve damage have to do with each other however. I had both ear drums punctured and drained by an ENT long ago when I had a double infection when I was working midnights.

I don't think they healed exactly well, since fluid does still drain out of there at times.

What symptoms did your husband have?

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

He does not have any symptoms.
He went to the ENT because he thought he had wax in his ears. We had treated him at home with the drug store stuff for wax, but he wasn't satisfied.

The doc said he had a lot of hair in one of his ears and cut it out for him. She said that the hair could account for the feeling of having something in there.

A vision examination showed scars on one drum that she said was from his childhood and healed except for one tiny tiny hole.
She put the tape on and told him not to go swimming.
Of course, I don't know exactly what happened because I didn't get to go to the appointment with him -- he does these things on his own.

That's good to know that Thiamine is not toxic
Thanks for the info about Benfotiamine.
I'll get him some.

Mari,

I have the New Chapter B vit and love them.

MrsD, can I add the benfotiamine on top of it?

Thanks

mrsD 05-21-2008 11:09 AM

Shelley...

only certain people need high dose or special thiamine.
Those with damaged nerves, or who take certain drugs that deplete it,
or who drink alcohol and think they have nerve damage from that, and
diabetics.

Thanks Mrsd!

I some have neuropthy that has improved as I have addressed certain health issues and malabsorptions. Was just thinking of adding on top since I am taking the metformin. But if not needed then great!

P.S. And thanks for your help the other day in the pm, my frined has gotten to the right docs and is taking care of his pressure.

Oh...

I am relieved that your friend finally got the right attention! Sounded like a
very dangerous situation he was in.

You can certainly do the benfotiamine. It is not harmful. Just more $$ for you
to spend.

It has been very useful for me however. But I had significant occasional burning of the feet which was highly motivating!
