To those with a seizure disorder...

I have found out some very interesting information. This works even with BTI patients as well.

I had been having seizures at least one or two every week. I went to get a VEEG done and the doc told me that I had Pychogenic NES. This, he says, can be brought on by PTSD, any type of abuse, anxiety and depression. So my PCP referred me to a doc who specializes in Neuro-Feedback.

I went to see him, he did a brain mapping and I got my results back this past Thursday. They were kind of staggering , but yet in a way I was relieved to know that now there is on paper the reason I am having seizures.

According to the brain mapping, my brain never quiets down. I mean it was going so fast during all the test he gave me i.e. close eyes three minutes, open eyes three minutes, memory test, math test etc.

My brain is 14ghz (I think ghz is right) above normal brain activity. Four is a significant differential, so mine is well above that. Someone with a BTI would have a negative differential.

What he explained is that because my mind never shuts down, I never really sleep and am always tired but always thinking, the seizures are a way of getting my brain to rest. I usually sleep 4-5 hours afterwards, sometimes a whole day. In his professional opinion, I need to do that until I can retrain my brain on how to deal with "insults" that it has been dealt. I go today for my first treatment.

Usually for a abnormal of 4 significant differential it is about 30 sessions. He is expecting mine to be around 50-70 depending on whether I am dealt another "insult" i.e. trauma or abuse and so forth.

One good thing about this is I am able to buy the equipment after ten sessions with him and do this at home as much as I would like. This could speed up the process. My insurance company will pay for the equipment, however when I am done with it, if I chose to sell it, I must give the insurance company the money made from it. I think that is a fair deal and I will do exactly that.

I hope this information helped some of you who have seizures and aren't sure why. I feel much better knowing why than people thinking that it is "all in my head". (Technically it is...lol)

Thanks for sharing your info. I found it very interesting. One thing you might want to do is go to a gym and work out to help calm your brain down. I've found that if I workout in the morning before work and run a mile on the treadmill I'm having fewer sz. than usual, I'm more relaxed, and I'm much more calm. If I may ask did your neuro order a wada test to be done? This is how they were able to find out that my sz. were caused by trauma when my mother was still carrying me in her 4th month of pregnancy and then my Grandfather passed away. The trauma that she went through affected me when she was carrying me causing to many brain cells to go on the RTL of my brain which in turn caused a scar which caused the sz. Take my word a wada test can show a lot of detail about E. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Neurofeedback DOES work!

Thanks for sharing this, and yes, Neurofeedback does work,
and it's been getting rave reviews by Neuroscience and
Neurology, in fact last year it's been given thumbs up!

It's not just working with those with NEAD, NES, PNES,
but also with those with Epilepsy as well as other health
issues.

Joe - Neurofeedback is a type of a alternative
professional Medical care that works that helps
quiet the brain down; and not only that they've
(Neuroscience) have found that it also helps to
quiet and/or minimize or eliminate epileptic seizures,
calming the brain down, in other words - "Silencing
the Lambs" and putting the brain back in synchro-
nization and back in functional order.

This work is performed with a Neurofeedback Specialist
who usually is found in the same Department in Neurology
in a lot of places, and in other places they have their
own office - and they work WITH the Epileptologist or
Neurologist.

The Patient is never taken off of their anti-epileptic
drug(s) - it is all worked together and titrated off
slowly and monitored, and it requires teamwork effort.

Some Patients can be removed from their med(s) and
while others their med(s) can be reduced greatly all

addition the side effects that comes with it - all greatly
minimized, especially for the Patient if they can be
titrated down, and it's even better if they can be reduced
down where they're off on so many, to a mono (single)
at a low dosage, or even better when they're on none
and being seizure-free!

Neurofeedback is costly; and the battle now is to get
Insurances to recognize it and to accept it as a form of
Medical Care. They know for a fact - it WORKS.

In addition - Your recommendations of Xanax or Valium,
both in which are Benzos - aka Benzodiazepines; are
all in the same family - when actually Diastat, Klonopin,
and Ativan are used to treat Epilepsy are in the same
family of Benzos, and yes, sometimes Valium is used in
treating Epilepsy.

This Benzos are normally used when the patient is unable
to tolerate Barbiturates - usually Phenobarbital is the old
anti-epileptic drug that's been around for ages; the Neuro
or Epi would then revert to Benzos in lieu. Only the Doctor
can make the decision of what is BEST for the patient.

We DO NOT recommend medications on this NeuroTalk
Forum at all nor at any other Epilepsy Forums either.
All forums strongly will discuss a medication only when
the Original Poster makes mention or inquires about it.

HOWEVER - People are allowed to explore into other
areas of alternative treatments; and in the field of
Neuroscience - they are doing just exactly that: Peering
into the doors of alternative methods and finding out they
DO work. People do have the right to ask and inquire about
such; for there are people out there whom have been
treated and received high success from it when all other
options have failed.

my brain is a busy bee too. my strategy is to channel it for creativity. mend a chair. draw a cartoon. journal energy saving ideas.

it's good to make it slow down occasionally. i swim once a day and do nothing but count the laps. (1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 etc). i am a fierce weed killer and leaf composter.

i look at it as an asset, that needs management.
