Death by Fenantyl Pain Patch

Don't know if any of you read the papers, or look at the online news, but it was in the NY DAILY NEWS this morning.

A home health aide (who has 5 bio kids and two foster kids), had a 6 year old foster child who was complaining of not feeling well. The child was given Motrin. Well, that didn't work, she complained, and the foster mother put a 75 fentanyl pain patch on her carotid artery. She was dead soon after.

It's all the talk of the news shows. Everybody is saying "what was the matter with this mother, putting that pain patch on the child??"

There is a whole page on how dangerous Fentanyl pain patches are, blah blah blah, etc. and how it's only prescribed for end stage cancer and for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis. No mention was made of neuropathy.

I can just see doctors saying "I'm not prescribing this anymore".

Good Lord.

How stupid was this woman??

So....so far all we know that the foster mom's story is that the patch is from YEAR'S ago (which no one believes). Also they found no Motrin bottles in the house. So they think she lied about giving her Motrin first.

The interesting thing is (if you click on the article), and go to page 2, scroll down to the end of the article where people can leave their comments.

It has turned to an argument about Native American Indians.

I kid you not!!!

what i read was that she got the rx in janurary for an injury in 2000. it didn't say the rx was from 2000. i'll go read it again.

here it is:

Alvarez told cops a doctor prescribed the patches in January for the chronic pain she had suffered since a 2000 car accident.

Wow, I must have missed that part.

Thanks.

Anyway, adults should NOT be placing fentanyl pain patches on kids. I mean, the woman can read can't she??

What on earth was she thinking?

They have compared her to the dentist that was just arrested for criminally negligent homicide. Seems she was throwing a birthday party for a child, and the barbecue fire wasn't up to snuff, so she tried to douse the rest of the flames WITH ALCOHOL.

Poor kid got burned over 75% of his body.

Now who on earth douses a fire WITH ALCOHOL??

i agree melody. kids stuff is for kids, not adult stuff.

heck...grandmonkey is 6 and he still uses johnson&johnson baby bath. i can't imagine giving him adult meds!

Don't worry Mel. Doctors know darn well there are idiots everywhere. And any doctor well versed in pain management isn't going to let something like this stop him from give people what they need to control their pain.

MelodyL 05-20-2008 08:06 PM

Doesn't she have to PROVE where she got the pain patch from? I mean, they are not going to let her just say this without any investigation into her story, right?

If she filled this prescription, then SOME pharmacy HAS to have it on record.

Oh brother. I want to hear how this all comes out.
