Link between MS and Cancer???

Does anyone know if there is a link?

I have always had moles and many, many removed. But they have always been atypical, never melanoma. Since my dx of MS, now I have had a melanoma.

Today my obgyn found that I have a breast lump. Come on! What else is God going to throw at me!?! There is no history of breast cancer or cervical cancer in my family. It might not even be cancer. I am going for a mammo in a couple of weeks.

I guess I am just curious if anyone has read that there is a link. I know that there are some articles out there in regards to a link between MS and melanoma but I wasn't sure if there was one with cancer in general.

I guess I am just trying to sort through all this. I know a lot of you have read up more on MS than I have. Thanks for any input you might have.

I don't think there is a Cancer/MS link, but I do think that some of the Immune Modulating Drugs do.

Cancer is in all of us, though, so anything can cause it to raise it's ugly head, I guess.

I am so sorry about your melanoma and now the breast lump..:( I hope the lump is not cancerous and you an keep the melanoma under control..:hug::hug:

Thanks Sally. I appreciate it. I doubt there is a link, I was just curious. And I am hopeful it is not cancerous and just a cyst. You are so right about it being in all of us. :(

I don't know about there being a link but I hope it turns out as nothing. May aunt went thru the same thing just last week and it turned out as nothing. Her mom died of breast cancer so she was concerned to say the least.

Yes I would be too! I'm glad that your aunt is going to be fine. I am sure mine will too. Thanks!!!!

They have great technology to remove skin cancer. They can take a segment out and examine it with a special machine to make sure they have clear margins while you are waiting.

I had two basal cell sites removed last fall. One was wider than they thought, the other deeper. Not as unnerving as a melanoma, granted.

They did 2 layers of stitches and now all you can see is a thin line. So much was taken out of my arm I had a saddle effect, but they said in 6 months if it did not resolve they would do plasitc surgery w/o cost. It resolved.

Hopefully you caught this early and everything will be okay. My neuro had a melonoma on the back of his knee. His wife spotted it. Twenty years later he is just fine. Hope you will be too!

Thanks so much starfish! I had it in my arm as well and I too have the saddle effect. It has been since last June. Everything has been fine since then, fingers crossed.

I hope it turns out to be nothing. I go in June for my yearly checkup and I'm always scared that they will find something. Sort of like waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'll say a prayer for you that everything comes back normal. Like we need more stress, huh??

Girlie Girl 05-30-2008 07:01 AM

Thanks sox! I appreciate your prayers! I know things will be fine. I have the mammo and ultrasound on 6/10. You know when your mind starts to wander and the bad thoughts come out, I think it just hit me yesterday. You are so sweet!
