Treatment for Restless leg syndrome in children

I wanted to post a note about a friends situation so that hopefully no one will need go thru this again.

Her 7 year old son was diagnosed by a Sleep Neurologust Specialist with Restless Leg Syndrome. He was prescribed Clonidine at 0.025mg, to calm him down and to help with sleeping. This needs to be made by a pharmacist specially, since it is such a low dose. Adult dose is a tablet of .1-.3mg. Within 25 minutes of taking the medication he was unresposive, on life support, on a chopper and headed for the ICU. The next 3 days were touch and go. He was given a massive overdose. After the meds were checked it seems the person filled the capsules with 23.3mg of medication each an error of almost 1000 times the doctors prescribed dosage. We were told she used the wrong measurements or didnt convert properly.

My point is, please make sure if this drug is used, or any for that matter, you check to make sure it is filled correctly. The drug itself is safe and I wouldnt hesitate using it myself. Ask the pharmacist to check, double check and triple check that they did it correctly. Accidents happen, but if the Mom wouldnt have checked on him shortly after he went to bed this post would have been a completely different ending.

After 6 days in the ICU he is home and doing good, hopefully with no long term damage.

Take Care
