http://www.magicjack.com/1/index.asp

It's a plug in device for your computer that you can use to make and receive phone calls with. supposedly you can stop your phone service and use only magic jack tas your phone for a yearly payment - way cheaper than a phone bill.

[What type of internet service do I need?
Any of the following: Broadband, high-speed internet, cable internet, DSL, WiFi or WiMax.
magicJack does not work over Dial-up or satellite internet.]

i use skype to make our calls no cost at all

Jomar 06-02-2008 02:09 PM

I signed up for skype awhile ago but didn't really look into it.

Did you cancel your regular phone service?

Thats my plan if this 30 day trial works out.

Then I'll only have to pay the DSL fee- no phone service charges would save me approx 30.00 a month.

I don't trust ANYTHING that says it's for FREE. You never know.

I wouldn't disconnect my phone, that much I know.

My friend uses Skype all the time when they do the webcam and want to speak to Poland.

I can never get over this. There she is in New Jersey, and they have friends in Poland. And they can see them on the computer, and they talk to each other.

You gotta love technology!!!!

No, you don't have to cancel your other phone service with Skype. Just that's Skype a whole heap cheaper if your other person isn't on it, and free if they are.

I looked at the MagicJack website and it looks good to me. For $40 a year you can't beat it.

I'm going to think about it for a while and order the free trial today after I do a little bit more research on it. It will save me about $300 a year. :)

I googled it and found this.....

Doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad product - you just have to pay a price for not paying for traditional phone service.

ahh... yes, I did more searches too and read more reviews about 50/50 {good/bad} - so I just sent a cancel my order to them and said I'll consider it later when it's more stable.
so I'll see what they say to that.

lor 06-03-2008 01:50 PM

They say you don't have to get a phone bill again. However (not including that 1st $40) what do you pay? ;)

Jomar 06-03-2008 08:21 PM

I think it was a yearly fee of 19.95.

That's another thing is I really didn't care for, the layout of their website - you have to look up everything in the FAQs and the answers are very brief with no real explanation. And the cost /fee info isn't on the main page and you can't see it until you fill in your contact info.

I did get the email reply that they agreed to my request and canceled my order, so that was nice and got the reply back just a few hours after sending it.

I haven't looked into it at all yet. I only see or hear of it on TV ads. I have always been leery of things on TV ads. No matter their claims. But that's just me. The original skeptic.

Yes, I tried MagicJack -- wait for "MagicJack Plus"

I tried MagicJack perhaps a year ago, and returned it for a refund within 30 days, for only three reasons:
1. the only (my choice of available area code/exchange) provided phone #
was long distance from my physical location,
2. I had to have my computer on (and running MagicJack software) at all times, when I wanted full phone service. (Only Voicemail when not running their software).
3. Everytime I booted my computer, the revised software was Downloaded/installed (great the first time, but why do
it again when it had NOT again changed?).

MagicJack (almost always) had fine sound quality.

I recommend you WAIT (perhaps 3 Months) for
"MagicJack Plus."
See short article @ PCWorld website(respected magazine),
"PCFree MagicJack Coming Soon", Jan-08-2011,
or just Google on "MagicJack Plus".

"MagicJack Plus", alleged to be coming by April 2011;
$50 for device & 1st year VoIP service ($20 each additional year). Do NOT need to run a pc to have full phone service!
(I feel this makes it fully competitive with SkyPE & Vonage, but much cheaper re United States phone service!)
Just connect included device to AC-outlet,
set up WiFi/4G-adapter/Ethernet connection,
and connect a regular telephone to its RJ-11 port.
(I believe I can perhaps live with
its having a non-local phone #,
and its doing one download
each time I plug it into an AC-outlet.)

I have magicjack and just love not getting bills in the mail. I have had it for a couple years it is 19.95 a yr. I know it has some quirks but all in all its great I wouldn't go back to regular phone and 100.00 phone bills for nothing. I can put up with a little when the benefits are so great.
