Counting carbs???

I have my concerns about being insulin sensitive...although I think I'm seeing a little improvement after taking chromium picolate. My Dr. suggested I take 200 mgs. daily and not eat too much sugar. I normally eat low fat, high fiber and (usually) don't eat too much sugar. However, when I do have sugar...wow...it shows up.
Anyway, now and again...folks will tell me to "count my carbs." This means NOTHING to me. What is a good/healthy daily carb intake...especially if you are concerned about being insulin sensitive?
Thank you.

Keep it simple. You don't have to count anything. I woudn't know how to count a carb if my life depended on it. (and I take chromium picolinate two times a day)

This is what I did. I cut out ALL REFINED SUGARS, this means anything white. No pasta made from regular flour. No rice. No candy, no cake, NO SUGAR.

If you eat sensibly, eat protein, eat vegetables, you'll get all the carbs you need. This means no big portions. Eat a good breakfast. Oatmeal, or scrambled eggs, with some whole grain toast. That should hold you.

I do NOT eat fruit. It doesn't like me, it doesn't bode well for my sugar readings.

Some people can eat an apple as a snack between meals. I dont' snack. I've learned not to.

But all diabetics are not the same. You have to find what works with your body.

If you want to tweak it a bit in your favor, just cut out EVERYTHING THAT IS REFINED. Don't eat any packaged items. Make sure everything you put in your body is freshly made. If you are a meat eater, make the portion no bigger than the palm of your hand. Have two sides of veggies instead of one side and the baked potato.

I don't eat potatoes, or any starches whatsoever. My body is much better for it. And save the treats for a special occasion, like a birthday party.

Believe me, if I'm going to a wedding or a birthday party, I'll have one piece of cake. That way, my body had something a bit different that day, and my metabolism get's a little kick to it.

If we eat the exact same way every day, the metabolism slows down. They taught me this at Cornell. So one day for lunch, I'll have grilled chicken over a nice bed of greens, (and yeah, I use grape tomatoes). I love them, and a handful doesn't impact my sugar.

It's when you sit down at the tv and begin with the chips and the popcorn, and little snack cakes, well we get into the habit of doing this, and it sabotages us.

Drink plenty of water, cut out the refined carbs and starches.

See how this makes you feel.

If I put any sugar in my body now, I feel the effect. It makes me sluggish. I don't like the feeling.

I didn't do this overnight. I just made one change. I stopped eating after dinner. Just that one change, set me up for better eating habits.

I wish you well.

Melody...for the most part..you have described alomst word for word...what I do that actually works with reference to feeling well and losing weight. I would add (and I would guess you would as well) small to moderate portions and regular exercise. I think the thing that surprises me is that a day or two off the wagon...causes great damage. I eat better than many folks out there...but it doesn't take much at all to cause stubborn weight gain. It is very hard...if not impossible...to be perfect. So, the temptation is to go overboard at times...eat tiny portions and/or over exercise. However, I usually regret this. Anyway, I am getting it all worked out. I think the healthy supplements might help to balance things out. I do like very much what you had to say...it provides validation that my thinking is in the right place. Thank you.
