Doxie Travel

Hi friends~ In a few wks, we will be flying to NC and taking our younger Doxie w/us. I already made her reservation w/the airline, as they have a limit of 3 pets per flight. She has to go w/us, as I don't have anyone to keep her and just can't kennel her.

My question is~ they have told me to get a carrier that is no more than 62" linear, 8 1/2" ht ~ 12" width ~ 17" depth.

Anyone know of a good place to get a carrier? We have a few hrs layover on the way back, so I will also have to medicate her. The airline told me to give her Benedryll and the Vet says they have tranquillizers.

What would you do? This doxie is like a baby to us.

*the older one cannot make the flight due to health probs, so is staying w/DS, as she sleeps all day and won't get him booted out of his apmt. The younger does not do well when separated from us... such a weenie ( ha ~funny, she is a weenie dog!!)*

I'd really like your opinions on this or if anyone has traveled via airlines w/a pet.. :Thanx:

Hi there Daisy! I've never flown with pets before and wonder if folks here have. Is she flying in the cabin with you or with the cargo?

dm, what about calling your vet? maybe they can get you in touch with another dog owner and you can borrow one? or maybe the vet has one you can rent?

i know most pet stores sell them.

can't help on the flying part. my daughter has 2 BIG boxers. i can't imagine them ever trying to fly with them.

I would also do searches on flying with pets just to make sure your little weenie is comfortable.

fosters and smith does dog carriers and lots of other pet supplies. Probably want a soft sided cage to put under your seat (unless you think it might be going into cargo in which case, you must have a hard sided carrier).

Vets today say never to tranquilize your pets while flying. It depresses their breathing which is not something you want on a plane. If you have a pet that's prone to getting excited, then benadryl is ok, but you should test it out in advance to see how your pet reacts (it can potentially make some more hyper).

I'll be feeding all my monsters benadryl when we fly to Italy. I'm hopeful that Yoda can go under our seat so only the boys are stuck in cargo.

DM --

What airline are you flying? Each airline has their own website with online information about flying with your pets. If you can get a carrier that will fit under the seat in front of you, some airlines will allow you to take your doxie with you in the cabin. They will allow up to 3 pets per flights on some airlines. Southwest does not allow pets at all, either in the cabin or as cargo.

Your little doxie will be well taken care of if you are checking as cargo. They are put in the pressurized and heated portion of the cargo hold.

I remember one time this lady got on one of PODH's flights and stuck her head into the cockpit and asked him about her dog. She wanted to know if he had turned on the heat down there cuz her dog didn't have much fur and he was cold all the time. She said she put his little fur coat on him but he was cold cuz he just didn't have much hair. :D

I would get an inexpensive pet carrier from petsmart or petco or even walmart. no need to spend a lot of $$ on a specialty one. put your dog's favorite blanket it in so she will feel at home. Talk to your vet about medication.

Check with the airline about layovers and connections on your trip home. Make sure that you write out all that information and attach it to your pet carrier for the trip along with your name and phone number and a phone number at your destinations - in NC and Toad Hollow. It's very helpful in case the luggage/cargo tag gets ripped off.

Have a good flight!
