throat closing up when talking...?
i don't know what the heck to make of this... my throat has decided its a good idea to randomly close on me while i am talking sometimes.. i gag like i swallowed a drink wrong...then i go into a coughing fit and all is well again... doesn't happen that often but it is annoying as all crap..
just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? i am unsure if this is MS related or allergy.. since i am allergic to something in the air around here.. but can't get tested for it because i am on a beta-blocker.. |
It happens to me sometimes, too, Punk. Choking can be one of the thrills on this ride. It can also be a dozen other things. When you come out of it, do you just go on, or is there any residual effect?
Does it happen when eating or drinking? It does with me, even just swallowing, I can choke. My experience has been that it happens most often when I'm upset about something. I don't have any substantial allergies, so there's no blaming that. |
Do you feel a tickle in your throat. I do this occasionally, but usually what it is is from my post nasal drip, when it gets bad. It makes my throat inflammed. Sometimes I don't feel it, but I'll do my flonase, and it stops. Other times, my throat feels like it has a tickle in it.

I think I know what you are talking about. My throat just closes up too. I breath in and I gasp. It feels like my throat collapses and when I take a breath it opens back up. This does not happen every day but it scares me.
I also have times when it is very painful to swallow and I also choke. I had a mouth full of water yesterday and I tried to swallow. I got half of it down and the rest came shooting out of my mouth. I was glad I was standing in front of the sink. |
i'm another one that has this, when eating or drinking ,my Dr. said he
thought it was stress, well I agree but it can get scary at well. I really have to relax or it does feel like your going to choke. Good luck and eat slow and chew, chew ,chew carefully..Hugs to al..Sue |
Before my dx, several months ago. I was having trouble with swallowing. In the middle of meal, I might just not be able to finish swallowing a bite that was halfway down. I'd have to get to a bathroom fast. At the time I didn't know what was going on. Now I'm wondering if it wasn't an ms symtom. I was having some other sx going on at the time. It finally just tapered off, and hasn't bothered my since. Soooooo......I don't know......but it sounds like you are not alone, IF that is of any help!:grouphug: So sorry for you.

I can swallow , but have to think about it and never did before. I have to make sure I chew well and a sandwich (the bread) can make a glommy mess that's hard to swallow. I have water bottles everywhere but lately it seems to choke me more when I drink. I use straws in them now, that helps me some.
I catch myself not breathing thru my nose when I drink sometimes and gasp when I lower the glass. |
Mine does that when speaking, and swallowing. Alot of what i try to swallow comes out my nose. It's gross with pills.

I have both MS-choking issues, and throat-closing allergies (especially to mold and feta cheese). I can try to explain the difference between the two, at least for me.
With MS, my choking is like a sudden blocking, like when you choke on water (imagine drowning ;)). It can happen with or without food and liquids, and most often when I am laying on my back. It makes me cough, but clears reasonably quickly . . . right back to pre-choking status. (I do know of some PwMS who actually end up with something "stuck" 1/2 way down though, but I think this would be a fairly distinct sensation if it happens). With allergies, it is a slightly slower process, and it feels like my airway is progressively getting smaller/closing off. I swallow a lot, and get a sense of anxiety (adrenaline??). It is NOT something I can "cough" away, and since it progressively gets worse, I NEED to get at antihistimines (Benadryl) to manage it. When I take them, the sensation lets up fairly quickly. That's my experience. Cherie |
I've gone through spells where I've had trouble swallowing. Almost like I'm not coordinated enough or forgot how to swallow food or drink. I was told by my neuro it was likely MS related, because sometimes other symptoms would worsen along with it.
