(Katie Daly, NECN: Worcester, Mass.) - Officials at UMass Medical School are calling it a new era in research and development.

Under Governor Deval Patrick’s $1 billion dollar life sciences bill, UMass Medical School received $90 million dollars Monday towards a new facility. A portion of the new building will house an advanced therapeutics cluster also known as ATC. The center's mission will be to target the underlying causes of diseases for which there is no cure, such as diabetes and Lou Gehrig’s disease.

While the center promises breakthroughs in science and medicine through gene therapy and stem cell regenerative medicine, officials also expect the center to stimulate the local economy.

Many envision the new facility will place Worcester on the map for life science advancements.

The new facility is expected to be fully operational by 2012.
