Root Canal

I may be having a root canal this week. Dr Hooshmand said never to have one with RSD but I wonder if any of you have had one. How did it go?

Thanks, Pam

Hi I was scheduled for a root canal as I kept having sensitivity, extreme, in one of my molars on the left side. They did a filling first for a porous opening, not a cavity, that they thought would relieve the problem. It did not. So then I was scheduled for a root canal. My Dr. , Dr. Schwartzman, advised against it- just before , two days, that i was to have it another two teeth, just around the other one began to have the same sentsitibity to hot cold, chewing etc. So I cancelled the root canal. It was rsd in the left side of my face. I changed to Sensodynen toothpaste and wait ing it out. About a month later the flare in my face ended and my teeth were fine-it took a while adn I still have occasional problems. It always turns out to be RSD. Just make sure you dont have the same problem I did.At the same time I had ear pain,, and tenderness on that side of my head. Neurologically, the left side of my head and face had just become comprimised with rsd. I hope this helps you make a decision. Cz

Life Style Coach. Yes I had a root canal earlier this year and it went very well. I was scared to death but my back, upper right molar was so painful (and cracked) I had to do something. I have a 40-year old large filling in the tooth so it was either pull the tooth or try the root canal. I decided to go for the root canal.

I have RSD in my left arm. It started in my elbow (ulnar nerve surgery) and moved to my hand and up to my shoulder, so I have had some spread. I started with this RSD problem back in November, 2006, and it is with me all the time.

Anyway, I went ahead with the root canal and had absolutely no problems. If you do a search on this website, there are a few older threads that talk about it. I read them, along with the dental protocal on the rsds.org website, and that made me realize I had to ask for a little extra numbing agent and to take a pill beforehand to keep me calm. I don't take much medication for my RSD, except when it flares, due to the side effects so my nerves were not "cyto" protected like maybe they should be. What I did was to take a 2 mg tablet of Ativan (for anxiety) and to calm my central nervous system. That, and a very good endodontist, made the procedure go well.

It was back in March when I had this done and at times my tooth is still a little sore, but it is 100% better than before. I have residual soreness because the crack in the tooth is very large so I may end up having to have it pulled due to the length of the crack, not from the root canal. I was told this before the root canal, so I am just hoping the crack does not get any worse.

I am a complete scardy cat when it comes to RSD (and it spreading) so I was a nervous reck and I put it off for too long. You should read all you can it get informed. Be sure to have an endodontist and your meds and you should be fine.

I hope this helps you,

Lisa

Hi Pam,
How are you? I have missed hearing from you. I have been posting on the old brain talk with VicC and the old gang. Sorry to hear that you are going through this. I have had many problems with my teeth due to meds, I believe. I did have a root canal, and when I got the numbing injection, I think he hit a nerve, cause I just about went through the roof. I though I'd never survive that, but I did! Also holding my mouth open for so was was incredibly difficult and painful due to a previous surgery that I had. (you know....)But, I did not have any residual pain. I do think that the pain I experienced, was way out of proportion for that surgery. I will give you a ring if I still have the correct number. I am still using my HBO Chamber with great results. Hope you are doing well. Love Di

I had several root canals since RSD in 2003 & then in 2005 I had to have all my teeth pulled & now have false teeth.

My dentist knew about RSD before I got it. He had another patient with it. Which was very helpful. I had no adverse reactions in having all this work done. I wish I had back all the money pored out on root canals tho. He sure didn't give me any kind of discount *LOL* & he sure should have. But I had no increase in pain because I knew I would have little to no pain. I did have a couple of dry sockets which he got me thru with minimal pain.

RSD for me in in my feet to ankles.

Hey Pam,
I too am extremely nervous about any dentistry (I have RSD on my left side arm and leg) and am very scared of doing anything to cause a flare up. I have had 2 root canals in the last 2 years and did not experience any issues with spread or flare ups. I like you had to have the work done as my teeth had broken as well.Talk with your RSD doc and Dentist and make sure they know what your concerns are.The best of luck to you whatever you decide !

Thanks

Hi

I appreciate all your input. I was able to avoid the root canal in the end. Flared up just from the drilling to prepare my tooth for a crown.

Diana, please call. I'd love to catch up. The fact you are doing better just thrills me!! I remember when your doctor died and you were in so much physical and emotional pain.

When I think I just can't do this another day I think about you.

Pam
