I took Alan out to a Japanese Restaurant

Today Alan is 61 years young. He always likes to go around the corner to our favorite Japanese Restaurant and today was no exception.

Now get ready to laugh.

We order our usual lunch box, (I get Salmon) and he gets his Chicken Teriyaki.

On the table is this little stand thingee with pictures of Sushi and all various Japanese Roll thingees. The photos indicate which dish is eel, salmon, caviar, cucumber, etc. etc.

So I'm looking at this thing and I happen to come across something called a SPIDER ROLL.

I said to Alan "Alan, look, there's something here called a Spider roll. Now I order rolls all the time. I get the California Roll and the Philadelphia Roll, so I know that the chef takes some seaweed, some rice, some crab, or salmon and rolls it up, cuts it in six pieces and puts it in a small aluminum thing with low sodium soy sauce.

So I know what these rolls are.

The waitress comes over and I go "Well, I know what all these other rolls are but what is a Spider Roll?' She answers 'Spiders"

I said "I beg your pardon". She continues "yes, it's a spider".

I look at her (and there are people at the other tables watching all this unfold. Alan stops eating and he says "did you say this is an actual Spider?"

The waitress again says: "Yes, this is a spider, you know what a spider is don't you??"

I looked at her and I said "Are you out of your mind, we kill spiders in this country, and YOU EAT THEM???"

She again looks at me and says: 'Don't you like spiders?" Whereupon the guys at the adjoining table dropped their sushi and started laughing their heads off. I'm not seeing what is so funny, because this waitress is telling me that they offer Spiders on the menu. Alan wasn't laughing either.

So I point to the actual picture of the Spider Roll (with stuff sticking out of it) and I said "This is a spider??" and again, she says "What do you have against Spiders??"

I then said (I'm not kidding, this is exactly what I did).

I stood up and I said "we kill spiders, we don't eat them, if I see a spider on the floor, I'll do this, AND I TOOK MY FOOT AND BASHED IT ON THE FLOOR.

She burst out laughing and said 'no no, this is King Crab, we just call it SPIDER".

Well, I think the whole restaurant started laughing at me.

I thought they had spiders on the menu.

Good Lord!! lol

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...9dey/img42.gif You've done it again Melody! Your stories are always so funny!

I'd be just like your DH though. There's no way you'd have convinced me to eat something that had spiders in it, in actual fact.... you probably wouldn't have got me in there to start with.

I'm afraid I'm not overly adventurous when it comes to eating out. I need to be able to understand the menu, so I know exactly what I'm eating. I daresay I've probably contradicted myself there. We can understand the menu, but it doesn't mean that what's supposed to be in the dish, is really the food that we're served!

Hi Mel!!
This is a Giant Japanese Spider Crab.
Just thought you might like to see what one looks like.
These critters can grow 35 to 44 pounds.

Oh my Dear. Thanks so much for showing me what a spider crab actually looks like.

I didn't know.

Wow, the stuff I learn every day would fill an encyclopedia.

I'll never order one of these. I'll never order an eel roll either.

But I did try an asparagus roll the other day.

Thank god they are not fattening.

Hope you all are having a good day.

Melody

Oh, Melody! You are hilarious! Bravo for showing them what you do with spiders! :p

Not sure you'd want to do that with one of those giant crabs, though. They might just grab your leg and throw you down.

Happy b-day to Alan!!!

I would not eat that spider crab any sooner than I'd eat a spider. YIKES.

Too Funny!!!

I would have thought the same thing when they mentioned Spider, ROFLMBO!!! ;)

Great Story! Glad Alan had a good birthday!!

I was once in Florida at a Red Lobster. They had on the menu "all you can eat" of Alaskan King Crab.

With butter sauce.

Don't ask how much crab I ate. I had to use thise nut cracker kind of things to break the crab legs and get the crab meat out.

It was the most delicious thing I ever ate. And the crab legs "KEPT ON COMING".

I must have had 3 dishes of the it. All those gigantic crab legs on my plate.

I thought Alan would die, he hated looking at it. He doesn't eat these things.

He won't try anything new. And god forbid I should ever make macaroni instead of his usual spaghetti.

I keep telling him "it's still pasta". He doesn't care. He only likes spaghetti.

The other night I made him fusile (which is curly spaghetti). I told my friends, want to bet he looks at it and says: "But you know I like spaghetti".

I should have bet them $1000. That's exactly what he said.

But he ate it. He had no choice. Either eat it, or wear it!!! lol

Oh I'll try new things. I just feel like a hypocrit to eat something I'm afraid of lol. And crabs that big scare me.

I grew zuccini once and won't eat that for the same reason - also do not like it. But once I saw how it grew it kinda freaked me out. It's the only plant I admit to being somewhat wary of.
