Allergic

Is anyone allergic to the anti nausea medicine....they have used both in the past and I get the same reaction....

Crawl out my skin...get red...sweat....and feel like I'm loosing my mind....

Does this happen to anyone else....And do they have to use that anti nausea stuff in the cocktail they give you in the ER?

Pete

Nothing worse them giving you an anxiety attack on top of you migraine

Ugh, Pete - sounds awful.
(And I feel so sorry for myself because I have the 'simple' headache)
I'm so sorry this happens to you.
What headache medication are they giving you?
Does it end the headache?

I'm wishing you well

PJAMES 07-02-2008 07:46 AM

I have fiorecette...

But I sometimes get the headache do long and terrible that the ER trip is in order....

Part of what they give...I am going to spell it wrong...compazene and regalin...Sounds like that..Its the anti nausea stuff they say works wonders....

But I am sensitive to it...The last time I went they gave me benadryl with it...But it still was bad.....

Now I don't think I'll ever go back..The headache will kill me first.....

Sorry on the medication misspelling....The top med its generic is called butalbital....That I can spell...

When I get my terrible headaches...>Sometimes they go away with the medication...Sometimes the lessen with the meds and last a few days....Other times..Look out....They stay until I get professional medical treatment....This is where the anti nausea medicine is used...

My husband seams like he might be allergic to anti-nausea meds, if he takes any he's out of it ALL day and talking crazy and yelling and doesn't remember ANYTHING that has happened. This happens even if he takes a low dose. It seams to take 10-12 hours for 1 dose to wear off.

I don't know of anything else that "really" helps with nausea.

I had been living with 24/7 headaches, headaches so bad I was nauseated most of the time and dizziness that came and went a lot. I was finally DX with MCS and the headaches got a LOT better, I'm even headache free at times.

The other thing is I use to be able to take all kinds of RX's just fine and now I'm allergic to a lot of them. Seams to be a common thing with MCS to just one day becoming allergic to meds that you were not allergic to before.

I have a lot of medication allergies so I know exactly what you are going through, NOT FUN!

I used to be a regular in the ER with migraines and Fiorcet didn't even touch them! I'd get a demerol shot or two with some compazine.

Now I am on Topamax daily for the migraines and haven't had any problems.

Have you tried Maxalt 5 or 10 sublingual tabs for the migraines? It worked for a while.

I hope you find something that works b/c migraines are no fun. Been there, done that!

I can't say I am... but I am allergic to the contrast dye used for some (if not all) CT or CAT (?) scans.

Anyone allergic to that or know of an alternative that will do the same job as the contrast dye?

PJAMES 07-03-2008 06:08 AM

I am allergic to the iodine-based dyes they use in all the contrast type procedures that DON'T USE Gadolinium.

Gadolinium is used for MRI's. I don't have a problem with that at all. It has no iodine in it.

You might want to check to see if they use GAD for the CT scan. Do they ask you if you are allergic to fish when they ask the disqualifying questions?

There are several other anti nausea meds that no one has mentioned so far. The ones I am thinking of right now are Phenergan and Zofran. Phenergan has been around for ages; but Zofran is some what new. Anyway, I learned about Zofran a few years ago when I was given it in the ER for nausea and it has been my life savor (in terms of being one of the best drugs to help my nausea). It comes in 3 forms; 2 of which are NOT IV or shots, hence they don't require an ER visit---a doctor can prescribe it in other forms.

Another thing you might want to consider HOW they are administered. In the ER and a hospital setting, most of the time meds are given via an IV and/or injections. IV and injection forms typically work much faster, don't require the ability to keep the med down when you are vomiting; and because of the slight differences in the in active ingredients, the side effects can vary too. For example, I've had all 3 versions of Zofran-- IV, pill form and the ODT form (you put it on your tongue and it disolves-- no swallowin required); and for me, "why" and which version I use depends on the situation. If I am in the hospital, I always get the IV version; if I am about to take a medicine known to cause nausea/stomache upset (such as some of the pain meds I was given following a recent surgery) I take the pill form and when I am already nauseas, unable to keep anything down and need something easy and quick, its the ODT version. As for phenergan, I do use it occasionally, but due to side effects I can only take 2 forms of it or I get sick and have some nasty side effects.

Good Luck in finding something that works for you and I hope things ease up and you feel better soon !

Stepping in on an area of expertise here LOL I can do that occasionally you know!

The butalbital/fiorcet, either comes with caffiene in or or codiene, the other active ingredient is a barbituate.

Reglan generally does not have any added "narcotic" effect on anyone and allergies to it are rare although they do exist....my son is severely allergic to it puts him in a comatose like state.

Phenergan does have a narcotic effect and makes narcotic medication stronger, so it can decrease the respiratory system and make you feel funny if you are susceptible to those types of medications.

Zofran as someone mentioned has been out for many years it stared out being used for cancer patients with nausea during chemo and used to be extremely expensive however these days it is no more expensive than anything else, I have found it both personally and on others to work very well and it does not cause additional narcotic side effects or make them stronger.

Hope that helps!
