My dog love's squirrels, does yours?
 

I have a Shelty mix, three years old, that just loves to chase the Squirrels. When we go for our walks, all she is thinking about is Squirrels. She looks up in the trees, around in the yards and in front of her. When we get to the park if there is a squirrel on the ground I will let go of her lease and she will
run as fast as she can and try to catch that Squirrel before it runs up the
tree. The Squirrels all ways win. She runs around the bottom of the tree barking at the Squirrel until I catch up to her and get her leash and talk he into walking some more so we can find some more Squirrels.

I never had a dog that was so in love with chasing Squirrels. What does your dog like to chase?

I have three Chiuahua's. Two short haired and one long haired. My little longhaired male (Copper) will dance on his hind legs barking at the squirrels. His bark becomes a barking shriek because he can't get them and since we live in a heavily wooded area, the squirrels race from tree to tree over him. He can only get to the three trees that are in our fenced backyard and this just frustrates him so badly and delights the squirrels. They deliberately will tease him. The other two (Cami and Rio) will finally look up like "Oh..that's what you are barking about". Then they will bark too. But I don't think they really get it.

Needless to say our neighbors probably appreciate it when the squirrels decide to stop their game.

I can just picture a little Chiuahua looking up into the trees and barking. The squirels do tease the dogs, they run up the tree, then they run around the tops of the trees with my dog following them on the ground barking all the time.

We were all in the house this summer when we heard this terrible shrieking noise in the back yard. My son runs to the window and hollors, "Puff, (our dog), Puff's got a squirel. She sure did! We all ran out side to get the dog off the squirel, the squirel staggers away like he's drunk and climbs up the tree and Puff got squirel bit on her upper lip. She is ok now, but she has three scar holes on her uppper lip. I'm surprised she still goes after the squirels . . . . probably mad at them and wanting to bite them back!

Our Golden used to chase squirrels, birds, and rabbits. We let her do it in the back fenced yard, but tried to get her out of the 'chase' mode while out walking. She once scored a rabbit in her mouth :eek:. My husband doesn't like squirells and rabbits in our back yard because they dig too many holes (and the rabbits actually ATE parts of our fence to get in and out)...so he was always happy to let her chase them.

I just saw a great episode of the "Dog Whisperer" where they trained the dog to stop going after other animals. It was quite simple...of course the guy is truly gifted. The worry is that they might take off after something and dart across the street, or I suppose pick up some nasty disease.
