Had to get a new VCR!! Help???
Okay, here's what happened.
I have 3 vcrs in my house. We are a taping household. We tape EVERYTHING. In my bedroom, I have a set up where I tape on the right and I watch tapes on the left. I had two tvs, two vcrs, everything was fine. One night the one (vcr) on the right started humming. LOUDLY. So I said "uh oh, got to replace it". You can't buy brand new VCR's anymore. I knew this. I went to Overstock.com and the best I could do was this refurbished Emerson piece of junk, that arrived today AND DOESN'T WORK. No problem, it's all packed up ready to go back, and they are mailing me a pre-paid label. I am VERY fortunate that there is this electronic second hand store around the corner from my house. He sells everything. Even VCR's. I went there today, told him what happened with Overstock.com, threatened him with bodily harm if the VCR he sold me was defective. The guy burst out laughing (don't worry, I know the guy for years). I said "I live around the corner, if I buy a VCR from you and it doesn't work, believe me, all the neighbors will know it." He laughed and said 'Take the Toshiba, I've tested it, it comes with the original remote, it works fine" I paid $25.00 for it. Oh, by the way the junky refurbished Emerson cost me $43.99. I'll get a refund. So I hooked up the Toshiba. I taped stuff, it records fine, it plays other tapes fine. It's a real beauty, probably a few years old, but it has all bells and whistles, VCR PLUS, etc. Now here's my dilemma. It didn't come with an instruction booklet, and I can't set the time. The remote has a Prog button. I pressed it and aimed it at the tv but nothing happened. I can't program anything unless I set the time. Can't set the time. I checked all the other buttons, they work just fine. So I'm either missing a button that sets the time. I pressed VCR plus, that came up on the screen. I'm going to still fiddle with it to see if I can set the time. Believe me, this is no big thing. As long as it tapes and plays, that's all I care about. BUT IF I CAN SET THE TIME, I WANT TO SET THE TIME. I tried contactng Toshiba but they don't make VCR's anymore so that's a no go. Anybody here know anything about Toshiba Model VC668? I figured if you press the Prog button, it would come up Set time?? But nothing happens Oh the pause button doesn't work either. On my other remotes, there's an action button which let's you set the time. Not this one. Oh, what if I get a universal remote and put in the codes for Toshiba. Think THEN I CAN PROGRAM AND USE THE PAUSE FEATURE.???? HELP HELP I'd like to know what time it is!!!! lol Took two photos. Here’s where the PROG button is (right next to the VCR Plus thing) http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...grambutton.jpg Here’s the whole remote: http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ole_remote.jpg |
I tried to find the manual /user guide online but no luck..
is there a year/date on the back of it? the remote doesn't have a set up, menu or display button? I can't tell from the pictures. or any of those on the front of the VCR? here there is no VC 688 listed at all?? but maybe if you pick one close to that model number it might be helpful - if it's free anyway.. http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/...duct_list.html or take it back to the place you bought it and have him show you where/how to do the set up /time stuff. |
Just read the DVR question on the other thread ...
What you might like to try is a combo VCR/DVD - plays both and records on both tapes & DVD's real handy , did the place around the corner have one of those?? Maybe you could exchange for it?? |
try this:
I found a similar model....
Here is the clock part of the directions: The rest can be found at http://tacpservice.toshiba.com/Consu...uals/vcrct.asp Pick M663 and load the PDF...the controller looks the same. |
excellent find msrd.
I made it larger on photobucket- hmm still no real clear to read though. looking thru it Mel says the Prog button doesn't do anything.. might be why the other people got rid of it.. the second hand store owner probably doesn't check out if all the buttons work on the remote. I don't know if another remote would be worth spending money on and it might not have all the same functions. the combo DVD/VCR's are really neat- i did a quick search on nextag for prices/stores etc. http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buye...=500025&phi=70 http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...shibaVCR-1.jpg |
I was snooping around on newegg, and found a DVD recorder only pretty cheap. Looks like the people are buying them for a good switch over, and be able to record all their VHS over to DVD.

yes, we have a combo...
it was only $99 or so.
I'd make sure the batteries are strong in the remote. Sometimes weak batts act strange and some functions won't work with them. It could be that the programming inside the VCR is broken too. |
Yep I was going to suggest a DVD/VCR combo as well.
Nice way to transition. |
WELL, GUESS WHAT MELODY DID YESTERDAY!!!! (and thanks a whole bunch to all of you who tried to find me a way to set my clock). But the program button doesn't work, so this remote is useless to me.
Well, I went to CVS to get a universal remote (you can return anything to CVS even after you open it), so on the chance it wouldn't do the trick, I knew I could return it. It's a Smart Universal Remote, that handles up to 4 things. All I want is the vcr part of it. I looked in the code book and it had 7 codes for Toshiba. I tried the first one. All the lights lit up, it worked. Can you believe the first code I punched in actually worked??? Then I said "Okay, Melody, press the Menu button" (There WAS NO MENU BUTTON ON THE ORIGINAL TOSHIBA REMOTE, ONLY THE PROGRAM BUTTON). So it was hit or miss time. I hit the menu button. THE SCREEN LIT UP WITH "SET THE CLOCK, SET THE LANGUAGE". I just smiled at myself and said 'good job, Mel". I set the clock. The language is english. Then it moves to date and time. Want to know the original date on this little Gem of mine??? 1992. Does this mean that this VCR was made in 1992??? I just put in the correct date and year. and all of a sudden, when I pressed MENU once again, there in front of me on the LED READOUT was 9:30 p.m. Oh joy, Melody now has a working VCR. and a brand new beautiful remote. I went around the corner and asked him about the Panasonic Omnivision he has there (we have 2 others and they are both Panasonic Omnivisions). The guy said "they work fine, but I don't have the remotes for them". I said "Don't worry, I have two remotes". so when I need to replace them, FOR TWENTY BUCKS, I can get the other two. I might just buy them to have them in the house. So I am now back to taping Stargate Atlantis, my soaps and when Showtime starts giving me "THE TUDORS", again, I CAN DO MY THING. Life is beautiful. I CAN TAPE!!!! lol lol and thanks much. Toodle OOOHH!!! Melody |
