FDA black box warning on antibiotics
I just found out that the FDA has issued a black box warning (July 8, 2008) on cipro, levaquin, and othe related antibiotics. They may cause tendonitis or a tendon rupture.
Those at the highest risk for this are individuals over 60, organ tranplant recipients, and those on steroid medications. I just started taking cipro yesterday for a sinus infection. |
Yes I saw that in the news yesterday, too. Seems strange that an antibiotic would cause tendon issues, but it must.

I'm starting to think that it's really no wonder that drugs and I don't get along.
Thanks, Cherie |
yes, it does seem odd but the FDA doesn't put out black box warnings lightly.
i hope no one has problems. but if they do they can a least make the connection. |
Jim has taken Cipro numerous times and never had an issue. But he did say how the he11 would he know with all the pain he has in his legs anyway?

I've had a tendon rupture (in 2001) It's extremely painful. It wasnt caused by an antibiotic tho. It was overuse and a partially caused by a birth defect that made my achilles tendons shorter than they should be and connected to the wrong spot on my ankle. I have noticed a couple of times when taking a quinolone (class of abx's that Cipro and Levaquin are in) that the tendon I ruptured will feel a little sore, but I've never had it rupture again. Since I've known about it for a few years, I thought they already had a warning on the quinolones. Whenever my doctor gives me one, they always warn me about the possibility of a tendon rupture. |
I just came off two rx's of Macrobid for a UTI, so I decided to look up which drugs were affected by these warnings:
"Ciprofloxacin (marketed as Cipro and generic ciprofloxacin) Ciprofloxacin extended release (marketed as Cipro XR and Proquin XR) Gemifloxacin (marketed as Factive) Levofloxacin (marketed as Levaquin) Moxifloxacin (marketed as Avelox) Norfloxacin (marketed as Noroxin) Ofloxacin (marketed as Floxin and generic ofloxacin)." http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/n...ory_66715.html Cherie |
